i have a 05 trx450 and was thinking about a new cam high compression piston among a few other things. Or one of the bolt on kits any ideas would be appreciated.

What are your current mods?

If its totally stock, take off the air box lid, remove the exhaust baffle and rejet it first.

A piston and cam will give you more power. I have the same piston and cam as d3 and I'm happy with the gain in power.

IMO from my experiences a cam will give you the largest noticeable gain right now.

This order I like to do my mods, to complement each other the best. I'm sure everyone has a different opinion on this though.

-Remove airbox lid / Intake
-Cam / Exhaust / Piston
-Porting / Bored FCR carb
-Stroke / Bore / CDI

Most dealers around here charge $90 an hour. I don't know about private power sport shops, have never let anyone work on my bike.
Few hundred at least I'm thinking. Plus the cost of the parts.
If you have at least basic sockets and wrenches you can do it your self.

Here is a guide on how to adjust valves, same as doing a cam swap. To give you an idea what it entails.
