Downhill is so much fun. You can spend some money though just as much making a 450 race ready you can spend making a bike downhill ready. For suspension Fox is the way to go. Check out konaworld.com or http://www.specialized.com/ They are the bikes i see the most at the mountains.

I love Kona bikes they are so nice. My friend had one and it was like floating over bumps and the bike weighed so little. I love mountain bikes and hitting jumps, offroading is extremely hard in florida either your on pine needles or sand. Both easy to wash out and if you pedal hard you dont go anywhere lol Grass areas though are fun, when I lived in NY it was dirt, clay, and shale so it was much more fun up there

your best bet is to buy a bike already built if you try to build yourself your going to spend way up there for nice parts. i ride hard tails and the one i ride i have over 3500 in and the one the old lady rides over 2500. find a prebuilt with a nice frame and build from there.

Even buying a used bike would be good because only thing that can really go bad is bearings. You dont have to worry about the engine blowing up ect like on a quad...

I used to ride a lot!

I had a Kona Cinder Cone for a while, but sold that to get funds for a Santa Cruz Heckler. I've since sold them both.

Here is the Kona...

i rode everyday last year. I had a 27 mile loop of trails right across the road from my house so i was set. If you can ride everyday like that you can almost throw out your workout plan. Not to mention the fresh air, adrenaline, and knowing your bettering your self makes you feel really good. I had a hardtail Diamondback, but it is broken in a million peices. I want to get a Scott all mountain, or a Gary Fischer Roscoe. But its rebuild time and racing comes first. so it looks like im stuck in the gym this season.

i have an old xc track across the road from my house wich is now game land and i can ride a pritty good loop on it as well as a strip job or 3 around my house that have some technical down hill stuff. after i finish my 450r i plan to get a bike and start riding.
