? about adjustments on shocks

going to aftermarket shocks for the first time. can someone explain to me about the preload, rebound and compression settingas and how u judge where to set things

when you order them they should be set up pretty close. we
ordered elka's and the rear was perfect, and the fronts where a
little stiff. a couple of clicks on the compresion adjustment softened
them up. the real test is at the track before you change anything.

And even then setup may change from track to track. In fact Ive been running the same set of ELKAs on my YFZ for two seasons and Im still coming up w/ different variations all the time.
