Ok here goes my first attempt at getting my 8yr old daughter (Taylor) into the beloved sport of quad racing!

Most of the donor parts came from her
2000 Monsoon Motorsports 90cc cvt Quad
Dubbed Pinky for obvious reasons

fasttimes
12-09-2008, 08:18 PM
As you can tell by pictures my little girl seems to be drawn to mud holes!

fasttimes
12-09-2008, 08:45 PM
Here frame had some issues so I got a Polaris scrambler/sportsman frame and started from there. Here is a list of new additions to the parts pile.
+2 / +1 single a-arms
extended tie rods
+4 rear axle
10.25" Works copycat shocks (JUNK!)
+3 extended rear swing arm
AC nerfs
Kasea Skyhawk plastics,seat,gas tank

fasttimes
12-09-2008, 08:48 PM
Looks like it still has a few more parts left to put on and she will be ready!

fasttimes
12-09-2008, 08:52 PM
Welding tabs and brackets to fit the kasea plastic!

fasttimes
12-09-2008, 08:53 PM
Well Taylor can't weld but at least she looks cool!

fasttimes
12-09-2008, 08:55 PM
Well it looks like a Kasea anyway

Here is Taylor in pj's actually thinking I would let her sleep in the garage with her quad.

Not a freakin chance. But I gotta give her an "E" for effort.

Your hooked.....your one of us now. It takes a lot of time and money...just make sure she's there the whole way...they have so much more pride in it when there involved in the build and maintenance. I'll help you anyway I can. It's all worth it when they get back to the pits after a race with that big smile in the helmet. Like I always told Kyle ..."you'll always be my favorite horse if you never win a race.

Yeah my life has pretty much started to revolve around getting her ready for next year. And yes I am figuring out it is extremley
expensive. I am just stressing about not being able to afford to get her set up right and safe. Its a dad thing I geuss. I just want her to have every oppourtunity to succede and enjoy life.

I really want to thank everyone on hear for all your help and advise so far! The main reason this project will get done is all you guys (and gals)!
Especially you Etondaddy, you are my hero! LOL

Oh the fat guy with the cancer stick in the pic is me. Kid says I need to quit cause they will kill me but I think she wants me to quit so I can buy her more cool stuff!

some good used shocks?
(Elka,Works,Fox,or similar quality)

front

and
rear
10.50" to 11.00" eye to eye

She really seems to like mx so thats the route we are going. Yeah it would be great after its done to let her just get out
with kids her age and ride. She used to go with me and some of my buddies but it wasn't as much fun for her with all adults.
I will just be watching for a while, I sold my quad to help fund her quad build.
I Was pretty damn depressed until I saw
her face all lit up while we were tearing hers down and going over everything we are doing to hers. Definitly worth it!

Yeah we were truckin right along til we ran into the shock issues. No big deal FOX
is sending me a free set because of my boyish good lucks so everything is great!
LOL, Yeah right.
I am taking everything apart now to start getting parts powdercoated, so hopefully Santa will bring me that winning lottery ticket I keep asking for.
I have now decided that after I find some good used shocks for now I will later be getting FOX shocks for her! Everyone should check out the thread by DCARTER
on here about what Mark at FOX did!
Thread name is

[i] Whats wrong with the shocks? Are they from Arizona? PS when should I expect my big bore kit? (just curiuos, no rush) Jerry
These are the ones off Ebay
(JUNK!JUNK!JUNK!) [/B]

fasttimes
12-11-2008, 06:16 AM
You should see the big bore kit today if I remember right.

The shocks are the ones that are sold on ebay by West Coast Quads. I weigh about 220lbs and I can jump up and down
on the front end and only get it to comrpress about 1 inch.
They are way way to hard for a 65-90 lbs rider. But thats what
they claim the shocks are set up for.

Whitfield
12-11-2008, 08:03 AM
Sounds like they are way too stiff for your set up.

I'm still learning about the little quads, but building IFS 4wds and Rock buggys I've learned a little about shock geometry. You probally already know this but some may not.

The angle of the shocks and mounting points will make a BIG change to the leverage. This will effect the ratio (a-arm movement to shock travel).

Mounting the lower shock closer to the frame will require stiffer shocks / more PPI. Mounting further away from the frame /closer to the wheel will require less PPI. Unless everyone is running the same Frame geometry and the same A-arm geometry, shock set ups will not be a one size fits all.

fasttimes
12-11-2008, 08:22 AM
Good point. The longer arms are set up for longer than stock length shock to keep geometry similar. The shocks I ordered are the correct length for this set up. I was thinking maybe I might be able to find softer springs in the same size. I am going to do some measuring on the springs tonight. I just can't get specs for the stiffness of these springs, No one I have talked to about these shocks have that information.
Hey when Santa brings the lottery ticket I will custom order
fox shocks for her anyway:p

leadsled01
12-11-2008, 08:44 AM
I bought a rear shock from WCQuads and I agree, they are alittle on the stiff side for 65 lbs rider.I wonder if the rear shocks and the front shocks are actually the same thing? Not sure because my front shocks are a different brand, but they do look identical from your picture.

fasttimes
12-11-2008, 08:58 AM
I talked to a guy the other day that bought all three at the same time frome them and they are exactly the same except the length.
And he said they are also hard as hell. He runs flat track /tt
and said they work out great for that.

airmobile101
12-11-2008, 09:18 AM
Im assuming those are the shocks off the Apex Pro Shark?

fasttimes
12-11-2008, 09:49 AM
I am not sure I have never paid any attention to stock apex shocks. I doubt it these things are extremely stiff.

fasttimes
12-11-2008, 05:16 PM
Ok got home and had some boxes waiting for me! Its great when you are all excited opening the boxes and then depressing when you realize its parts you don't need yet!:D then:(

12-11-2008, 10:00 PM
Ok so I am back in the dog house. So I decided it was too cold and I was too tired
to do anything in the garage tonight, but my mind was changed for me by a spoiled brat. Her front tires came in today and she had to see what it would look like on her quad. I normally mount tires at work since I do not have a compressor at home, but I know a few old school tricks and have a little roadside compressor you plug in to cig lighter. Ok you fill in the blanks
Prybar , wheel , tire , ether , lighter , kaboom , tire seated on bead , and wife running down the stairs screaming with phone in hand getting ready to call 911!

Hope everyone enjoyed that. I am going to have to use Taylor's sleeping bag and sleep in garage now. Cause after she calmed down and went back upstairs I did it again! Well I couldn't just do the one side.

Ok need some advise on which do you want wider front or rear or same?
right now
rear is 42 inches wide
front 40 1/2

I have always thought you would want front to be wider.
Here are my options with stuff I have
front 38 1/2 or 40 1/2 inches

rear 38 or 42 inches

I do plan to make changes way down the road when her ability and my check book grow but I am looking for the best set up with what we have to work with.

airmobile101
12-12-2008, 04:42 AM
That could be a toss up either way on how she rides it. I would suggest you try to even the front and back as much as possible.

etondaddy
12-12-2008, 05:17 AM
When I send you the 1" spacers put them on the front and you'll have your 42"........ I plan on coating the stem Saturday morning and shipping the stem, jug, and spacers Saturday afternoon or Sunday UPS so you should have them middle to the end of next week. The front should be wider or the same as the rear.......

It is going to be just over 40 inches wide with the spacers. Right now without them it is just over 38.

etondaddy
12-12-2008, 06:32 AM
You could turn the tire around and make the 3+2 wheels 2+3.......and that will get it. I don't think the valve stems will hit.

Mike Kozura

fasttimes
12-12-2008, 06:54 AM
yep already did. I am thinking that for now I will go with the
40 inch up front and just over 38 in the back. Then later after I
become a famous singer I will go dual arm and have it wider. I think 40 inches wide should be a pretty stable start for her.
What you guys think?

kylie'spitcrew
12-12-2008, 07:38 AM
Hey fasttimes, if Mike does any powder coating for you, you will be very happy with it. He did Kylie's hubs, kick stater, and the frame. We were very happy with everything and Kylie really loves her frame (Kozura Blue). Kevin Smitley (BAK Motorsports) stayed up allnight and put Kylies quad together so she could race that weekend. Kevin and Mike are great guys and we can't thank them enough for all they have done for Kylie.

OK Randy just got the stem done...... I'm going to get the spacers off the hubs....they look bad I'm going to glass bead them and see how they come out.......... polish......we'll see. The bar clamp came out OK.....not worthy of the Caswell Plating and Polishing Forum........ but OK... the marks are still in from when it was made and my scratches.....that sh*t takes time and patience. Face shield or not it still glues your eyes together. I'll get it all to UPS tonight or tomorrow....either way it's not going out untill Monday. The pics suck but it looks pretty good. Of course you have a one of a kind...... I rolled the crome base on the edges...... Kyle or Kevin weren't here to tell me to stop putting powder on it..... or pull the air hose off the gun.

I'd always get the holeshot on my 750 and pull over in the first bowl turn and let the dudes that were really trying go.....I'd wait for Wolf the owner and we'd ride around and BS.....until we were about to get lapped then we'd pick it up a bit......lol.

That's old Wolf....the owner on the right with the hat.....good dude

Guess what....
I was just at my friend's shop at lunch just shooting the bull and picking up a quad frame to take back to work to get stretched and a lady came in and asked how much her quad was worth because she needs some money for xmas. Me and my freind walked out side and it was a 90cc Monsoon... My freind looked at me asked... how much do you think it is work? I said prolly about $200 if it runs. The lady said that it does run, but not right and she will take $200 for it.... soooo
I have a project quad for $200 that will need some minor work. Tires are slack, plastics are good, but are ugly, steering has some play, and it does run but needs a carb cleaning and maybe a freash topend. Are you going to use your engine? If so, what specs did you find out about it... I am assuming that it is like a stock Polaris 90cc Scrambler/Sportsman... Something for my son to rag out and keep the ours off the DRX...
Thought it was a quinky dinky...

Hey sounds like a pretty good deal man. Yeah I am still using the engine for hers. They are pretty standard from what I can tell. It has 42mm crank. I have researched a bunch of the specs so if you need any info or stock parts let me know.

i havn't really looked it over that much, i had to get back to work.... i paid her and my friend pushed it in his shop....

so it is a normal jog engine, 52mm bore with 42mm crank...cool... i have so good ideas for this toy...

I do have another question... what was the deal with the Monsoon frame? It the geometry same as the other Taiwainese quad like the one that you are working on now. I am thinking of getting some more plastics and seat... I know that the tabs will need work, that will not be much of a problem, but i was wanting to know that the frame itself was the same...

fasttimes
12-20-2008, 11:05 AM
Yeah frame is same basic design as polaris etc. I can see from brand to brand crossbars and bodymounts do vary. We had to move to cross bars and make all new mounting to put the kasea plastic on for Taylor.

coming back apart now. Hopefully going back together in a couple weeks covered in powdercoat (chrome is what she has decided on).
Taylor wanted me to make sure I didn't let them change the color of the stem because she thinks it looks pretty.LOL

So frame, arms, and swingarm will be powdercoated chrome. Anybody have any pics of one done that way? Or opinions?:huh

I build a 10x20 concrete patio with a room under it 10 years ago.......and never did nothing with it untill now. It was sapposed to be my mans room.....with a poker table and beer mister........ but it looks like it's going to be Kyle's quad shop. We got the second light up and got the gas line almost done.

Yeah earlier this year I went from a house with a 2 car garage and a 30x40 shop to just a house with 2 car garage under house. So every other night I get yelled at about the smell of gas, brake kleen, ether, exhaust fumes, etc, etc, etc.
I used to own my own shop but this economy has kicked me in the nuts really hard so now I am a service manager and
do side work when I can in the garage.
Wow how times are changing!

2 trailers & 2 motorhomes ;) .. & she 's only 10 yrs old !!
she currently runs/races modded 70 & 90 cc mini quads (when we have time ) & mostly races 65 & 85 KTM MX bikes!!...& has a recently aquired atc 70 as a pit bike :eek2:

Well looks like I am going to be down for a bit. Amanda brought me a buddies laptop to use. The doctors are not sure whats wrong with me yet. So far I have had 3 cat scans on my abdomen area, 4 blood tests, 3 urine tests, and I am going to get a colonoscomy tomorrow at 1 30. I have just started drinking this crap that makes me **** my brains out. The last couple weeks have pretty much consisted of massive painkillers and sleep. They put demerall in my iv for a while but I just culdn't hang with that stuff. They did morphine but that made me puke a lot so now its vicaden and I just sleep. I have been having unbeleivable abdomen pain that has me rolling around on the floor crying and wishing I would just die. Just can't eat any food. The worst part is they havn't figured out what the cause is. My white blood count is off the charts somedays and smedays its low. Now that I have a laptop I will try and get everbody up to speed. Taylors quad is still a pile of parts waiting to weld tubes for nerfs and then blast and powdercoat. Unfortunatly it is on temporary hold til I am alive
again. Thanks for the over the boot pants advise I didn't think about that! If my daughter does 125 trophies and loves the sport I will figure out a way to afford it too!

Take the time to get your health back right.

We'll be sending up a prayer for you and your family.

Let me know if yall need some one to talk to. I just whet thru somthing similar with my wife. She's never been sick before and was in the hospital for abdominal (They thought it was an ulcer) Sept 28th thru Nov 3rd. My wife had Mesenteric Ischemia (Make certin you don't have that / it is often overlooked).

I don't want to bore you or scare you but if I can help in any way just let me know. I'll pm you my #.

Please, if you can look for an advcocate, someone with medical knowledge / experience to help keep an eye on what is going on.
This person could be family / friend / church member ect... An extra set of eyes with a different perspective to ask questions is a wonderful thing. Don't over look moving to a teaching hospital if necessary, For us my wife's life depended on it. If not for our advocates I would not have known. Hospitals are very similar to auto repair facilities, some are much better then others.

My buddy is a painter at a body shop. Its automotive paint. He did the pink base coat with flex in it. They use flex in paint for bumpers etc so the paint will give a little and not crack or flake as easy. Then he clear coated it I think with some flex in it to. If you need any more info or details about the process just ask and I will get ahold of him for you.

Its almost 48 inches wide and holy crap does it handle well! It has rath dual arm set up with elka rezzies and a roundhouse swing arm with elka rezzie out back. Rath gusseted frame, rath nerfs and heels, rath antivibe stem, 400ex hubs, spindles, calipers up front, koso exhaust, durablue axle, sms built 90 aircooled motor and trans with green gears, and the list goes on and on. Oh yeah of course I had to make all new mounts to put the Kasea plastic on cause she had to have it look like a 400ex! Well we had an awesome time in Sedalia!!!
Taylor had the time of her life so I'm happy.
She was really learning in leaps and bounds all day. I don't think it will take her long to become a competitive rider with how fast she is picking up on stuff! She made it through two practice runs and her first race, but when she came off the track the quad went to a strange solid smooth fast idle and wouldn't shut off. We pulled the tether, coil wire and I got the snot zapped out of me pulling off all the cdi wires and well it kept running. I finally used my boot to smother the exhaust to kill it. Never heard of that one before. So after about 5 mechanics looked at it with me we came to the conclusion that either the pick up coil or stator shorted out to the motor. Anybody seen this before?
So I will be digging in to see what happened tonight. All and all I still couldn't be happier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p :)
