I went riding today and somehow bent a rear wheel. Soooo, I might as well get some stronger ones, but I'm not sure what to get.

I like to ride MX tracks and seem to remember reading where most run 18" wheels? What about width...wider the better?

And while I have the wheels off, I thought of going up a tooth or two on the rear sprocket...any suggestions here?

Thanks

I run 8 inch by 10 inch rims on the back. I run stock gearing though

I run MX...20x6x10 in front good for getting over holes and 18x10x8 rear.

Smaller front sproket=more bottom, less top end.

Smaller rear= less bottom more top

Smaller rear tires= more bottom, less top.

There is a really good article in "steering and suspensions" on this "steering and handling" by 400EXrider which talks about rim inset to consider too.

it all depends on the track for the gearing. I leave the rear stock, and change the front sometimes, either 13 or 14. 13 for tighter tracks, and 14 for tracks that are more wide open. You can get a brand new 13 for $16 on ebay, or tag metals for fronts and rears.

Dropping 3 in the rear is equivelant to dropping 1 in the front.

Correction: down three in the rear is the same as up 1 in the front.

The pro flat trackers get into the ratio of the front/rear sprocket and how it affects the tranny. There are programs on the net for some quads I've found. For MX I do like Mr Big time and use 13 or 14 front depending on the track size leave the rear stock.

There are alot factors to get torque to the ground including riding style. Since most claim this quad has poor low end torque I think the 13-38 sprocket set up on the 09 is good for most tracks. Not sure what they had on 08.

Douglas makes a really good metal wheel and Hyper non. I'm getting away from integrated hubs since the spline on the axle wears over time.

I don't know about the trx back sproket but after more consideration it is better to change the back sporket......here is a post I put on this on DS450HQ

Actually to change the torque or rpms for a given mph up or down it’s better to change the rear sprocket since going to a smaller front sprocket requires the chain to turn at a smaller radius causing more friction and wear. It’s always a good idea to change the chain if it's not new when changing sprockets and visa versa since these surfaces are made to wear together with respect to the chain roller.

The 09 comes with a 13-38 and we noticed a dip in torque at low third. A 5-6% change down would be good so,

38/13= 2.92 stock sprocket ratio

40/13 = 3.07 new sprocket ratio

(new ratio / old Ratio) - 1) * 100 = change as a percentage.

(3.07/2.92) - 1) x 100 = (+ 1.0513 -1) x 100 = 5.13 % change from stock down.

Positive % trade top for bottom, negative bottom for top.

I could figure this out better if I knew what rpm I had at low third but I can try this and experiment without a dyno. 5-6% changes are good to try at a time, any less won’t be felt, any more might be too much.
