I did mine a while back without using high temp... Baked off a little around the head, but not bad at all... If I have to ever re-do it i'll use high temp though... Just follow like that thread says.^^

i wouldn't paint the cylinder or head, paint holds in heat and these 400ex's have enough problems with heat fade as it is

Hey thats the one i was talkin about Wheelie! I love how the motor looks on yours. Did a professional do it or did you do it yourself?

I did it myself. High temp ceramic paint, flat black. After the paint cured, I sanded the ends of the cooling fins.

i can honestly say that its not worth it at all, unless you have the cases powdercoated and the head molycoated. my engine has been done for a quite a while longer, and unless you never get it muddy, it will not stay looking like that for very long and even color fading will leave you very disappointed.

Agreed... Unless you plan on repainting it every year... Here's a pic of mine a little while after, maybe it was because I didn't use high temp paint, but either way I think it'll turn up looking something like this... Notice the major color difference.:ermm:

What would you guys think if the quad was just used for MX racing. The quad doesn't get to dirty.

molycoat.. just incase of heat issues. i wouldn't risk spray painting the head while racing. it will still get dirty, faded, and crappy looking. they look good for a little while, then no matter what it will change.

Are you talking the spray paint and moly coat will change or just eh spray paint?

spray paint. i'll be sending my head and cylinder out to pappy sometime in the future. i believe he quoted me at $64 to molycoat both pieces.

I think I'll see if my powdercoat guy can do moly coat. If not dave400ex powdercoated his 450r motor and said it held up great.

the powdercoater i go to said that he has a lot of harley guys that want their engines redone and none of them have any complaints. so maybe pc would be fine with an air cooled engine, maybe not. i have asked pappy and he said it would hold in more heat.

Ah I see, I contacted Jet Hot Coating for a quote. I'll see if they get back to me.

It started immediately burning off around the cylinder as I was breaking the engine in, but it wasn't this bad... I'd say this picture was taken like three or four actual rides after I had painted it...

If your thinking about doing it, use high temp paint, and wash it immediately after every ride, then i'd say it can last quite a while...

i painted mine this spring, put a ton of hours on it this summer, and it is holding up great. i used hi-temp satin black grill paint, only AFTER i cleaned the motor, wiped it down with alcohol, and used a self-etching primer (the key on aluminum). the only paint i've lost is on the heads of the bolts when i did the top-end rebuild mod-summer.

i would recommend riding it a few times and not getting it dirty,to let the paint bake in good.
