Yeah, sorry to say. They require drilling and tapping of the motor.

They require removing the valve cover, clutch cover, and doing some drilling and tapping, but it is definitely worth it. I have Temp FX strips that tell you the temp of what it's placed on all over the bike. I'm seeing about a 32 degree drop average and that was with all my riding in the summer months too.

Yeah, I put a 4-Stroke Tech Cooler on too. It works great, keeps the top end cooler.
Its not an easy upgrade, but well worth it if you ride hard for a couple of hours at a time.

the best mods are bolt ons though. less hassle with things and more time to ride. I thought about the FST oil cooler but I hated the idea of having to drill and tap and block off other oil passages to put this thing on. Transmission coolers would work the same and you could install it so you wont have to drill and tap the motor just run it in the circuit with the stock oil cooler. It wont directly feed the oil up top like the FST but i'm sure it will cool is all down. I say why not add fans to the bigger oil coolers? People have good luck seeing a small drop with adding one to the stock oil cooler so why not add a bigger fan to a bigger oil cooler? Thats the 1 thing that sucks about the 400ex. It will get pretty hot and companies that sell them directly for the 400ex either cost a lot or requires some altering to the motor. Look on eBay for transmission coolers. You will be surprised as to how many look just like the FST or the Jagg oil coolers. Check out Setrab Oil Coolers they make them for NASCAR and ARCA. Jagg Oil Coolers uses Setrab Oil Coolers but are "special" because they are for quads and sold as that. Well check out the price comparison if you go right from Setrab or get the kit from Jagg because it comes with the correct length rubber hoses, fittings and clamps to bolt on but also cost about 4 times more. The make the same oil cooler a Jagg 10 row for harleys and when they tested it it was a 10 degree drop in temperature everywhere on the bike. I would think those numbers would be more impressive on a quad because its a smaller motor and not a vtwin.

could you give a brief explanation on what needs to be "blocked off" for this kit to work? also, do i just need tap the valve cover? what about the clutch cover? pictures would be awesome if you could come up with any.

Here is an old link (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68709&highlight=cooler)

I have a PDF of the instructions, but know how to post or send PDF's:rolleyes:

ive seen that link, but the instructions still seem a little vague to me, unless im missing something that you click on from that website. im basically confused about the oil line routing and about what needs to be blocked off inside the engine. i can find pictures of the cooler mounted, but i can't find any showing where the lines go.

my plan is to make an adaptor and add another stock oil cooler inline with the one i have. so two stock oil coolers should do the trick

i will. it looks like i'll just need the two fittings to make it all work. darius- thanks a lot for the instructions. thats exactly what i was looking for. all the mods/ repairs im doing kinda feed off each other.. i had to get a new starter clutch, so since i need to take the left case off, i needed a flywheel puller.. so why not get the sparks key with the puller since my engine will be running cooler now anyway! oh, and im putting in a crf timing chain, so while i have the valve cover off, and the clutch cover, why not tap both of those things for the oil cooler! haha these things couldn't have worked out in a better order.

One thing that makes this cooler better then just adding a larger one is this one feeds the oil from the cooler to the top of the head,so if your running a hotter cam or more compression it cools where the heat is the most.

When you take off the side case you'll see a oil vine that feeds oil to the head, all you do is tap into that and block off the stock oil hole, then plum it back into the head where the stock one feeds at. You can use any cooler you want as long as it fits, and before you start the bike it doesn't hurt to fill the cooler with oil so the head isn't starved for oil wile the motor is filling up the cooler.
