I use the same, except I use the Mobil 1 15w50 with the silver cap and red label. It's pretty much the same thing as the gold cap 15w50 extended performance, just slight variations in the additive packages of the two. Main reason I run it is I can buy bulk boxes of it at Costco for much cheaper.

In the colder months I run Shell Rotella T 5w40 full synthetic (dark blue bottle). This stuff is great as well, and can be bought pretty cheap at Walmart for around for about $14 a gallon.

Also don't let people tell you that you shouldn't run synthetic. Synthetics developed for motorcycles/atv's are perfectly safe to run provided you run the correct viscosity for the motor. But they usually come at a higher price.

You can in fact run automotive synthetics, like the Mobil 1 and Shell oils mentioned, but you have to be careful about which one you select since not all are compatible with wet clutch motors. Your best bet is to take people's advice from threads like these, because they have run the oil first hand and know whether or not the oil causes problems.

Just getting that out of the way because there's always some ignorant person that says synthetics are bad to run in the motor etc.

I have used Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10w 40 since I have owned mine. Its fully synthetic and it is safe for wet clutches.

since u have a 440 with 12/5 piston and that 6 deg timming key i would use amsoil 20w50 u get what u pay for , if u decide to go with rotella or mobil extented performace just make sure u change ure oil every 3 to 5 hrs , oils that were made for cars were not designed to be used as gear lube like out trannys ure it for thus rotella or extended performace mobil one will break down fast and lose viscostiy Alot faster i personly use to use rotella in my old ttr230 and pitbike with no problems but since u hae a built quad why cheap out now , AMSOIL!!!!!!! MCV 20W50

dang i just noticed your running a 440 12.5:1 compression and the timing advanced 6 degrees. didnt think it was safe but did you notice the key at all when put into such a high performance moto to begin with?

I already had the +6 key before I did the 440 kit, My actual compression ratio came out to 10.6-1 by my calculations (I build automotive racing engines for a living).

I wasn't trying to be cheap about the oil just wasnt sure about the clutch with synthetic oil.

Has anyone checked the actual timing on a 400ex??

thanks Bobby

Synthetics, in general, have no affect on clutch life or operation at all. An oil is not slipperier or less so simply becauz it is synthetic. its the additves such as moly and other friction modifires

Yup, and that's what you need to be careful about, as some synthetics have them and some don't.

also amsoil mcv and mcf is API GL-1 grade which can be used as gear lube so that speaks for itself

seems like you guys really like the snythetic oil i personally hate it, I ran it in my car and then the rod bearings when out i then ran it in a yamaha warrior 350 and the rod seized. Since then and now with my 400 ex i run 20-50 vr1 valvoline and have never once had a problem

I think its 1.8 quarts, so 2 quarts will be more than enough.
