I've been out of the game for 2 years now (when i sold my predator 500), and im looking to get a new quad.

There are quite a few 450Rs and yzf450's on craigslist in my area for around 3-3500, for 04/05 450's.

I think the honda 450's look far better than the yama's, but reading about the problems such as the crank bearing issues are making me watch my choices.

How common are the problems with the R's, such as the crank bearing going out and whatnot? I wont be doing any racing or anything like that, but from what i've read, that doesnt really matter.

i think it was just alot of the early 04's that had those problems. but other than that just keep freash oil and check everything regularly and it will be fine. love my 05 no problems what so ever.

The 04s/05s dont really have any real problems other than weak frames. The motors are very very solid and the crank bearing going out isnt as big of a problem as everyone makes it out to be. I race mx with mine and hang with the A class and the only thing that has broken on mine is a shift fork went out after almost a year and a half of hard mx. Good luck!

yep. if you check your filter after every ride or two. and it seems shaving free then your ok. and i have heard a few stories with the yammys crank going too.

Between my buddies and me we have had 4 04 450r's and 3 05 450r's and besides a few cracks in the frames we have had no issues. No crank bearing problems at all and some of those have been ridden and raced hard for years.

They have a "flexible chassis" if you will. They all crack, but a few gussets here and there and it will stay together for the most part.

Rod Bearing issues w/ hard riding/racing.

The 04 blew up & had the motor rebuild by HONDA ---- Never buy the extended Warranty. Total rip I knew I was ----ed after 1 week at the dealer, I wasn't gonna miss out on the riding season, went elsewhere & got the black w/ flames. 90 days later I got the 04 back.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy another 04 ,I just wouldn't pay retail - trade in or less ;)

I'm 6' 220lbs - the yami is to small for my comfort

Put the HRC kit in if ya get one

Both of ours do - We rip in the trails & ride at Breezewood MX - no real racing to speak of

Although my son & I are the 08'couch race champs at BPG.
