I'll have some pics this weekend. I'm not racing with it, but I'm going to do the first practice session on it. I will post up what I thought, along with some pics. The following weekend, I should have the new Laeger's nerfs and bumper, and hipers installed.

Is Dustin racing for Factory Yamaha? If so, why do they never run any of their stock components that are "race-ready"? If I'm buying something because it's race ready, I would like to see a factory rider racing with the stock components.

1socal450
12-06-2008, 06:02 PM
Dustin has obligations with other sponsors to use there products. You cant look at it that way,not even the ktm riders will use a stock set-up.Lets face it,theres always room for improvement! After riding the new YFZR,the only thing I am doing is exhaust,re-valve/re-spring(dual rate)the already long travel shocks, and thats it.Unless you are at the pro level, thats all this thing needs!!!

12-07-2008, 08:47 AM
the shocks on the new 09 are 2"s longer and the old 08 were 15 1/2 so get your facts right and also does anyone know whos making aftermarket stuff so far i should have 2 this week

Long travel is obviously something you dont understand!Even a 5 inch shock can be long travel.Yes the YFZR is long travel setup.A long travel suspension has a certain amount of sag, which allows the vehicle to sit lower(pro stadium trucks/desert trucks are a good example)which allows for better turning/handling.When the vehicle is in the air,whe wheels drop out to the full length of the shock, upon impact the shock works at its full length of stroke and then settles at its ride height. The new YFZR has a few inches of SAG...

No,they are a bit longer,Yamaha has a different mounting position than Suzuki.Go pick up the front end of a LTR,the front wheels almost immediately come off the ground with the bike, then go pick up the new YFZR,the bike will pick up a few inches, before the wheels follow. The length of the shock has nothing to do with being long travel or not!!!

Who cares about the shocks. I just hope it has a really big power band.

I raced my new yfz450r this weekend, still getting used to it being stone stock.
Pulls great, handles great, but the front is way stiff. I'm used to 12" of travel on my other quad.
The stock shocks are 16-1/2" just like the yfz, but valved different. The stock upper a-arms limit the upper ball joint travel, allowing Yamaha to use the standard length shock. Probably to keep the list price at under $8k
The new Laeger's upper a-arm kit will allow true 18-1/2" Yamaha long travel shocks and should perform much better.
I managed second in the holeshot in the first moto, not so good in the second moto(probably over thinking)
I love the riding position, much more room than the yfz and better for me than the ltr.

They let you race without nerf bars?

tedwilley
12-09-2008, 07:04 AM
Yes, and shame on me for doing it. Normally I wouldn't have even considered it, but that Yami felt so good. I couldn't help myself!

1socal450
12-09-2008, 08:07 AM
I dont know how a upper a-arm kit will allow you to run a longer shock? The shock mount positions wont change, that upper arm kit is only for adjustability.Nice pics, you lucky Ba*****...:D

tedwilley
12-09-2008, 09:04 AM
If you pick up the front end, the upper a-arm with the stock shocks, downward travel is at the limit of the upper ball joint due to the geometry of the a-arm/ball joint mount. The lower arm has plenty more travel available. The Laeger's upper a-arm would change this upper ball joint angle and allow the use of longer shocks. It's also camber/caster adjustable.
Longer shocks do not mean it would necessarily sit any higher than stock. the ride height is determined by the spring length and rate, they support the bike at a given height. Longer shocks just provide more overall travel from full extension to full compression. That after all is the advantage of long travel.
Other than the front end travel, only minor changes will make this a kick *** quad.

The stock shocks were too stiff for you? I had them set 4 clicks up from the softest, and they felt great - and I'm about 130 lbs.......night and day difference in feel/handling from the YFZ, btw. I have raced stock YFZ's a LOT.....I'll be getting my YFZR in January, and plan on only adding a full pipe/intake system and racing it that way all year in 2009. VERY MUCH a race ready quad.....!!!

I'm keeping an eye on this new YFZ 450R, very nice quad.
Though there's one thing that keeps it from being race ready: kill switch. I don't know why Yamaha didn't add that from factory :(

I mean, you can enter in official races without nerfs, without beadlock's, without fat bars, fat pegs, bigger arms etc BUT you can't enter without a kill switch, it's a safety device. So, straight out the box, the new yfz isn't race ready. But it's very good i admit :)

There's only 1 quad that's race ready out the box...

most of the YFZR's won't be raced anyway. It's the same reason they have the big quiet exhaust.

tedwilley
12-10-2008, 03:12 PM
I read that Yamaha based the yfzr setup on sales data that while over 50% of 450 motorcycles are ridden on mx tracks, one's y 10% of 450 quads are ridden on tracks. Sad

400grl
I'm used to LT with 12" of travel with triple rate Axis shocks and Flexx bars.
VERY different than the stock yfzr.
Most of my racing and track time is on the same track as the motorcycles. Lots of ruts and braking bumps!
Plus, I'm old!
I don't blame the shocks as much as the progressive rate stock springs.

I stand CORRECTED.
I spoke to Laeger's today. The stock shocks ARE LT 18-1/2"
And the Laeger's upper arm kit are camber/caster adjustable, which not a bad thing by itself. Plus they are candy apple red like the frame.
Guess I should have pulled a shock and measured it before spouting off!
I believe the shocks motosx put on his yfzr are 18-3/4" axis and they fit the stock yfzr LT a-arms.
Those front stock shocks are just too stiff for mx. I have my hi and lo speed all the way out, and then back in two clicks and one click respectively and they were better, but not still soft enough for me.

We raced ours this weekend. We threw on a set of nerfs from an LTR450 (only slight modifcations required) a Pingle kill cord, race tires, and took it out.

Very impressive. The biggest obsticle was having the confidence to do the big jumps. Without being able to hear the motor (stock exhaust), it was a little hard to judge if you were going fast enough, and if you could grab another gear or not.

For a 150 lb rider, the suspension was a little stiff, but not too bad. It soaked up the jumps, without bucking the rider off.

Oh ya............ The thing turns like a wet dream!

400grl
12-15-2008, 04:30 PM
Yeah it does - I almost threw myself off a couple of times when I was riding one for a day! LOL!! Shock rebuilds on the YFZR should be a very affordable option for many racers.....VERY cool!! :)

Does your '09 have the efi?

tedwilley
12-16-2008, 07:12 PM
The 09 yfz450r has EFI, the head off the yz450 bike, and an all new crankcase.

FCI did some dyno runs with the airbox off and the spark arrestor removed, got around 47 HP stock!
Fuel Custom Intake(when design is finished) and a full exhaust system should yield 50+ with no internal mods.

47hp with the airbox removed and baffle taken out :eek2: . Where did you get or hear that info from? Not saying it's BS but that's ALOT of hp for a bike that doesn't even have an exhaust on it yet. With an added pipe it should push 53/54hp. Portwork and hc piston would get you close to 60 and you still have room for more mods such as more aggressive cams and bigger valves. Maybe I do need to get rid of my bike for one of these monsters :ermm: lol .

From FCI

The first run is lid off, no seat, no filter at all. took stock foam filter off to compare tubes, baffle-in

second run, lid off, no filter, no baffle

third run, fci intake with filter, no baffle.

This is all with out tunning, i have no programmer for it yet

These look nice, my biggest problem with the 04-09 yfz is how they turn. I sure would like to ride and compare for myself.
But can afford it. Parts are just now getting cheap, I couldnt see myself starting all over again. Maybe in 3 years.

AR1, we race 80% of time like you do, on the same track and same day as the motorcycles; lots of ruts and braking bumps.
While I have ran the last 3 races without a stabilizer, it is only because the new mount is still being finished.
NO one who races regularly on these types of tracks doesn't use at least a stick, and most have Precisions.
Less wear and tear on the quad and the rider, and faster times; period.

If you run quad only tracks, or race casually, you can probably get by without a stabilizer, but why would you??

AR1
01-05-2009, 09:52 AM
OK. exactly same

our tracks all for motorcycle not for Quads and i have been using stabilizer for 3 years now, desert baja race and mx so i get use to it,

thanks for the numbers u give me but i don't think they can do any thing to me because i can't pay them direct,

i sent email to Precisions and they told me they will be ready next month and they will let me know when its ready,
we race every Friday, we took break for x-mas only.
