I want a 450 for the trails. Although I like the 400ex, the 450r is more fun...reminds me of my Raptor in the trails.

I have a 2006 450er setup for mx and it has 2005 spindles and hubs. Wife has a 2008 450er setup for trails. Point is, I am more familiar with the 2006+ engine than the 2004 and 2005 models.

I can get a nearly new 2005 450r kickstart that is completely stock for $3,000. I was thinking of making the 2005 my mx quad and converting my 2006 450r into a trail quad. My 2006 is being gussetted for the 2nd time in 6 months. I am thinking this frame is ready to move to the trails. I am a little nervous about the crank issue in the 2005 but that wouldn't stop me from buying it.

The other option is to avoid the 2005 and just get another 2006+. I would have the choice of leaving my 2006 for mx and the new one for xc riding or I could put all my stuff on the nearly new 2006+.

What would you do?

I'd build the 05 for MX, I think they hold up better when heavily modded, at least motor wise. The 05s dont have transmission issues like the 06's do. An 04/05 will only have crank bearing problems in the first few hours of run time, and it wasn't many, it was more rare than people make it out to be. I often see the rod bearing go more than the crank bearings. Do the crank update to it and they're pretty reliable. I prefer the 04/05's myself for MX racing.

I probably should have jumped on this deal last week but I was heading out of town for the weekend. I was going to give him his $3,300 asking price that he listed it for on Wednesday. I told him I was coming home tonight and would look at it on Tuesday with cash in hand if I like it. He listed it today for $3,000. Guessing he sold it. :(
