View Full Version : Wheelies on quads - do the grab bars stop you from going over?

I just got my quad and have done a few wheelies, but nothing great. I've read that the grab bar will stop the quad from going over, but my riding buddy tells me he went right over on his before, so I'm not so sure.

Anyway, does the grab bar give you any protection or is like a bike - go to far back and it's crash time? I'd like practice them a lot more but don't want to mess up the bike or me for that matter.

Thanks.

Yes its true the grab bar will save your ***. if you are riding a nice wheelie and you flip back do not let go of the bars just ride it on the bar, if you let go you scrape up your *** trust me i flip all the time.

It really depends. Thats not really what its there for but it could stop you. On some short brab bars its really not going to stop you from the quad flipping on top of you, and don't relay on the grab bar to save your a** everytime you flip.

well the stock one will stop you if your going slow and doing wheelies but if your flying then its gonna flip.

most of the time but if your in soft dirt or going up a slight incline it can. I know sometimes i've had it where the quad flips over backwards and to the side where the wheelie bar can't stop it.

yea it will save you if the conditions are right but my favorite thing to do is to go over in like second gear jump off the back and push it over while its still going then jump back on and ride away andit only takes like two steps lol kinda fun imo

It will save you most of the time but, don't do it alot though or you'll be like me. Broke mine and the pipe caught me (sucked bad  .) When you do go back on it, tap your rear brakes and you'll come back down (if you can think of it) most of the time I'm just trying to hang on! :D

if you are that concerned about it you can get a 6 pack rack or a grab bar extension (goes like 2 inches farther out).

It has always stopped me..... except it hurts when you fall off the back.

Be carefull if your on a Blaster, after a couple hard hits to the grab bar, they brake off.

lrdmx400ex---- just to let you know, when your riding a wheelie and you fall back on the grab bar and put it back down on all 4 wheels while still moving it is called a 12 O'Clock wheelie. The front faces straight up like an arm on a clock pointing to 12 :D . It's a real stunt. I do it all the time. I am in a motorcycle stunt team. It's a cool trick if you can pull it off. The faster you go, the more sparks you get and the better it looks... I learned it on my motorcycle and tried it on my quad... Pretty easy.

i would think that it would save u most of the time, but yeah i have seen them break off before...lucky for the person, they werent going anywhere but in circles(strange, hard to explain) and it just broke(they were standing behind it-running with it)...and one time my friend put it up on the grab bar and fell off...the quad just kept going, at least 100ft...it was cool...he was ok too:D

All I can say is its saved me a bunch of times! I ride w/ "wheelie Kings" & I'm not too good at it myself, however I try every now and then. Like others have said..............hold on when you go back, or it'll probably hurt!:D

It will save you yes but if you do hit it dont let go and hit the back brakes.....it slams you down but at least it wont go over backwards or get all scraped up.

Yep they help out pretty good, except for the fact of them braking off, after a few hard hits. On my third grab bar now! Going to get a buddy of mine to make me one out of steel and hopefully it will last! :blah

I haven't done it myself since I am a pretty new rider. I usually get it up half way than let off the throttle cause I get scared even thou I have seen my friends ride my six pack rack on the floor at the dunes.. I figure one of these days I finally get used to it if I try it enough times.

it can but like nausty said it can go over on to the side if you are going a little fast.and the stock grab bar is not to strong and this is what can happen to it. my brother was riding it when this happened and as you can tell bent it pretty good. that time it went over on the side and cracked the plastic. i now have a 6 pack rack and if you go to far back it will save more then the stock grab bar but i have never gone far enough back with my six pack rack on to tell if it will go on the side.

iT ALL DEPENDS ON THE TERAIN. IF YOUR ON PAVEMENT MOST LIKELY THE BAR IS GOING TO SAVE YOU. JUST THE OTHER DAY I FLIPPED A HIGHCHAIR WHEELIE IN 2CD GEAR AND THE BAR SAVED ME. ON THE OTHER HAND, I FLIPPED 3RD GEAR WIDE OPEN IN THE DIRT AND THE PARTY WAS ALL OVER. BENT THE FACTORY BAR, BENT THE BARS, AND BROKE THE FRONT RIGHT FENDER SUPPORT. SO I QUESS IT ALL DEPENDS.

YES YES YES..........I have a Raptor and it is near impossible to flip..............Not only will it save you but will stand straight up..........Just hang on!

sometimes....but not always. out of the many times i wash my quad every couple times i wash the under carriage and make sure everthing is ok and all bolts are tight. to do this i put a piece of wood in my yard and stand the quad straight up so that the grab bar is on the wood and the quad is balanced(the wood is so that the grab bar is not scratched). Any way, if the conditions are right the grab bar will stop u from flipping. if u are on a hill(even on a piece of land that is slightly angled) u are more than likely going to flip since the quad is not balanced. ive never flipped my quad back but if u think about it the grab bar can only stop u from flipping to a certain extent.
