tether kill switchs, open vs. closed?

looking for some clarification here.

I'm under the impression that the "closed" type tether kill switches, are for bikes with batteries and electric start.

and the "open" types are for non-battery bikes, (without electric start).

am I correct here ?,
or is there more to it that I am not taking into consideration?
