I was wondering what needed to be done to get your quad ready to race flat track on ice, Im somewhat close to Daryl and Jen Rath and I know they've done ice racing in the past so they would be able to help me out I think. Have any of you raced on ice before? Is it fun? I was wondering how the studs worked and if it was even worth trying out. If you have any pointers let me know because I want to ride this winter.

Thanks guys,
Bartman

p.s. If any of you hear of any races in MN this winter let me know

Basics are to lower the front and rear usually by a lowering kit. Otherwise I know a buddy of mine used a ratcheting strap to lower his front end a few years back. Get some tires with a harder compound so that the screws won't pull out of the tread that easily. Turf tamers in the rear and Razr's in the front usually work best.

For ice screws I usually pick up a few packs of them from Bob's Cycle. A few hundred in each rear tire gets the job done and on the fronts I usually put a line down the outsides and the middle.

I have not tried studs because typically it makes it harder to corner and with ice screws you can get quite a bit of traction if you set them up right.

Ice racing is a blast and I'm sure there are plenty of lakes that hold events in MN. The only lake I've ridden on in MN was Lake Washington down in St. Peter a few years ago.

For tires in the rear get Cheng Shin's. Everybody runs them. Run 5/8" length screws, one per knob in the rear tires. Yep, lower it down because you can get a ton of traction on ice.

Check out these websites for ice racing schedules.

I'm sure you can get them off of Bob's Cycle's website.

You guys should come over to Wisconsin for some winter riding Jon and/or Bart. We've got some lakes to mess around on over here and there's always great trail riding up in Hayward during the winter. We're only a few hours from ya'!

That's good to know that there's going to be races up in Superior. Do you know when they will be holding the races? I'm not too familiar with Superior and have no clue where Barker's is but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a bunch of quads and bikes on the lake.
