I was going to pick up a 2004 trx450r saturday. For $2600. its all stock and looks mint. But it needs new tires all around.

Then i found a 2004 yfz450. All stock, brand new tires and looks mint for $2500. what would you do?

Go with the 04 honda. The 04 yfz's had a lot of problems and you'll find yourself dealing with all of them especially if its stock. Go with the honda, there bullet proof. I had an 04 set up for mx but never touched the motor just took good care of it kept up with the maintenance and i never had to rebuild it ran like a champ.

What "lot" of problems did the 04 YFZ have?

I owned one of the very first to come out and the only problem I had was the battery going dead if not run with the lights on and the plastic decompression plug popping out.

There were countless problems with the 04's. Leaking water pump seal, the battery problems but that can be avoided by running with the lights on, oil plug popping out, weak subframe and swingarm and the engine was just weak i cant tell you how many people i've talked to that have locked up there motors in there yfz's. Im not saying the yfz's are bad, that was the first year they came out so there bound to have problems like that. I would buy a newer one any day cuz they've fixed all of that stuff. I think the honda would just be a better choice in this situation.

The YFZ shift shaft would seem to just fall out.. don't forget the catching on fire and burning to the ground issue...

the yfz 450 just get the cooling sheilds for it ,they guide the air on the motor , in the long run you will like the yfz a lot more fast good susp. good stock width, i think theres some more mods for it thn the 450r , but either way you cant go wrong

Tough choice.. they both have problems.

The yfz is more fixable though. The oil mod is easy enough to do. The 04/05 450r's were notorious for crank bearing failures left and right.. thats an expensive fix. But you could never be sure.. it was hit and miss.

So it would be a tough choice for me. I'm leaning towards the yamaha. You can do the oil mod and just maintain it really well and it shouldn't give you many problems.

its a toss up. hondas are known for their reliable motor. the 04's and 05's had crank problems. However only one in ten hondas had the prob.

Yamahas are great bikes. They make a lot of horse power built also, Not nearly as reliable as a honda though.

its up to you.

i would personally take the honda.

im kinda leaning towards the honda but its an hour away and the yfz is 5 minutes away and has brand new tires. But i can get rear tires for the honda for free. so idk

It is almost 2009...wonder how many of these fixes might have already been done anyhow.

If you have a right leg, I would go for the Honda.

Sure the Hondas had crank bearing problems, but if it was an issue it would happen in the first hour or so of riding. It'd be pretty tough to buy one used and then have it happen....

More often than not it was the rod bearing that failed on them anyways. That's what happened to mine.

I think either way you'll be happy with this. Maybe call the guy with the Honda and explain your situation, maybe he'll lower his price bit to match the YFZ or to compensate for the tires and/or yoru driving.

plus the hondas problems are alot bigger would you rather deal with an a possible cooling problem [yfz] or a cracked crank case? look on craigslist youll see them saying i need a crank case! hondas are really reliable but they rushed way to much to get the R out

hehe theres a thread for the crank case ill try and find it for ya

Anyone that i know who has ever owned a honda never had the crank bearing problem. Thats not to say it wont happen, but i think its unlikely like someone already said if its gonna happen it would have went out right away. So buying a used 450r i dont think would be a problem. Personally, i would just look at them both. Its easy to tell when somethings been taken care of or not, just see what one looks better to you.

Still the honda is very reliable i dont think you'll have any problems with it as long as you take care of it. Only problems i had with my 06 was the starting issue, and i broke both the subframe bolts when i was practicing at the track. Other than that it was an awesome bike.

I think I've learned it is better to break the subframe bolts that the subframe. I got an LSR gusset kit on mine so the subframe bolts don't break anymore...now my subframe is cracking.

haha man that sucks. Yeah i was just riding one day and the track wasnt very well groomed and the whoops were just rough as hell well after going through them i hit a pretty good size table top and something just didnt feel right lol. I couldnt figure out what happened either i just though my seat had popped off, then i saw the bolts. I just put some new ones in i had laying around in my toolbox and they never broke again.
