this is kind of a dumb ? but are you supposed to screw the stick in or just measure it from the top? it probly wont matter because its only like an inch difference but jw.

I screw mine about half way in because I dont really know which is right, but your right it isn't much of a difference

My bud had a owners manual for his 300ex an it said to check without scewing in.

Correct. Unscrew wipe it off, insert without screwing it in, and check level.
