My dad is building another car, a 69 Rambler. The car has yet to be started on, BUT heres what will be there

4 bar

appx 550hp NA SBC

TH400 trans w/ brake

appx 2800lb race weight


Now for the questions. I am trying to convince him that a 10.5" slick will be fine.. he is unsure. I see the effort as being wasted in tubbing out the car, let alone the cost and HP it eats.

And for my next ?, what size gear? I was thinking around a 4.10-4.56... again Im no whiz.

What do you guys think

When we built a car for PINKS, our LS1 powered Mustang went low 9's on a 10.5 inch tire.

A 10.5" slick will be MORE than enough tire to hook 550hp.

We had a mustang with a WELL built 347 that had a 250 shot of spray, and it would stand on the bumper on 10.5" slicks.

As for gear size, it depends on how tall the tire is, and wether your running the quarter mile or the eigth mile...

We ran 3.73's in the car mentioned above, on a 28x10.5x15 slick with a C4 (no trans brake) and that car ran a best of 9.40 at 145mph in the quarter mile, after standing on the bumper.

I wish websites didn't delete video's for bandwidth... stupid stangnet.:(

It makes me laugh everytime i see tubbed cars that arent even close to putting out the power that would require a tire that size.

A 10.5 will support ALOT of power with the suspension setup correctly. My uncle(a renegade champion fun ford/NMRA) put down an 8.30 pass the other week on his 10.5 tires in renegade trim. Heck the pro outlaw 10.5 cars have broken into the 6's on a 10.5 tire.

my dads friend is tryin 2 build the worldest fastest street car, last time we saw him he dyno'd it at 1700hp w/ 2 stages of nitrous and he has another stage 2 go

3.73's should be good for your setup i think.

Jake, what are your dads plans for the car? Play, street or ET drag? For the first two 10.5's will be good enough and fun. If he is going to run ET he might want to do some checking. The reason you see alot of people with "too big" of a tire is so they will never have to worry about losing the race at the starting line. It insures a simple burnout will be enough to hold their car for the launch.

Its proven a 10.5 tire will hold over 2000hp with consistent times. But again its all in your setup. Alot of tubbed cars ive seen "bandaid" the issue of having a suspension that woulnt hook, so they throw more tire under it to try to hook better. But at the end of the day every likes something different i guess. I can tell you first hand though that a little 28x10.5 will hook:D Check out the video below and go to the end(the 6.07 mark or so) after a simple burnout, i think it hooks decent:devil: The same car runs 8.30's at 160+ on a solid run with minor changes since this video(car was setup to nopi specs/rules during the race in the video).
