ya i never relized that til i opened it up but i am gonna put something over the side covers and stick a cloth under the piston than clean it with a tooth brush. the dang swingarm bolt is really pissing me of i heated it up for like 30 mins soaked it with pb blaster hit it with a 4 pound sludge and still nothing how would i cut it out with the grinder? and another question if i put the stage 2 hot cam, rev box, wiseco 416 kit, curtis sparks timing advance key, 450r carb and i already have a k&n air filter with outwears filter bag and air box cover off and a pipe and my gearing is 16,38 and i weigh 85 pounds will i stay up with a stock polaris predator? my friend might be getting one if he dont get a 400ex and i always have to be faster than them all :grr: lol

Psh! Be more patient! That thing will not come off in 30 mins..

Heat it with a bas tortch, spin it (if it will), heat it, spray some Oil Koil on it, repeat, then POUND POUND POUNDDDDD, then start over again.. I like to get everything real hot then spay some oil in there so it can get it in there better, then I spun my bolt.. got it out in about 6 hours.. but that wasn't non stop on the bolt however..

hearing all of these horror stories, i decided to take care of my swinger bolt before it became a problem. Luckily is popped out like a piece of cake. I then loaded it with grease and anti-seize and reinstalled it. That should last me a little while. I will do this again periodically because I do plan to build up the whole quad in the future.

tyman2395
12-03-2008, 07:22 PM
guys i really really need some help my swingarm bolt is stuck in the motor case it is still in the frame but frozen in the motor case. i need help on how to get it out because the guys is coming up friday and i need it out or i cant get it powdercoated :(

rcatvrider
12-03-2008, 07:25 PM
Cut it wherever you can get a cutting wheel or sawsall in on the sides of the case. Then you can at least get the motor out and bang the pieces of the bolt out from there.

tyman2395
12-03-2008, 07:30 PM
k i will try that tomorrow what is the best paint to paint my motor with ? i am gonna go with silver

Got access to a mig welder and a fairly large bolt. I know this sounds crazy but I ratcheted by old EX down on a stand CAREFULLY welded the nut on the end of the bolt, bolt head end. Got a long Cheater bar for some extra torque on that thing, and after huffing and puffing for 4hrs and letting my 256lb drunk friend sit on the 400 we got it out. I'll snap a photo if I can find the bolt, the quads gone and I need to clean out the shop. Just another idea.

tyman2395
12-07-2008, 07:52 PM

tyman2395
12-19-2008, 05:25 PM
k guys some updates from last time my frame is coming back some time after christmas i live 4 hours away from where it is getting done and the guy is coming up my way for vacation and bringing it will him the colors i picked were mirror red and black magic. I am ordering a 416 wiseco piston monday and sending it to get bored and honed hopefully some time next week. I still got my parts for sale so hopefully i can sell them and buy some more stuff.

tyman2395
12-24-2008, 11:58 AM
well i got bored so i thought i would update a little i ordered my 416 piston today and should be in some time next week. The i will get it bored and honed. I am still looking for a stage 2 hot cam for a good price i don't really want to pay 164 CAD for it. I haven't been doing much with the build because now it's cold out and i am in the process of getting a wood stove for my garage.

Three things I see...

1. The swinger bolt... looks like you got it out... the new one that goes in... send it to Pappy @ Bk performance and get it molycoated. This will eliminate your problems....

2. Ditch the timing key... not a good idea the way it looks like your build is going...

3. Ditch the K&N. Garbage. UNI all the way.

Also not sure what else you intend to do with this bike, but what compression are you going with and what head gasket are you going to use? I'd suggest a cometic thin gasket and get that compression CLOSER to what it should be on the advertisement.

2muchquad
12-24-2008, 11:00 PM
i have had good luck my K&N's over the years. With my first hand experience and not something i read about online or in mags,i like them.I have them on my 250r,400ex and my ktm450sx and yz426.I never had a problem wit'em:)

tyman2395
12-24-2008, 11:07 PM
For the swingarm bolt i will prob sent it to pappy to get molycoated how much to get it done? And I'm gonna run a 10:1 piston in it because it was the cheapest i found. As for the timing key i am gonna add it because i am gonna add a bigger oil cooler on the list. As for the air filter i am gonna keep it because i love the K&N with the outerwears combo. I am bored so i will attach this pic of my 450r carb

well today i ordered my chain kit,a-arm bushings, some parts from service Honda. so in the mail coming to me right now is my Wiseco 416 piston, a-arm bushings, my chain kit, and parts from service Honda. Once i receive my piston i am gonna send it to get bored i already have the money aside. Now i got 90 left over and heres the parts i need front wheel and steering stem bearings, swingarm bearings, twin row axle bearings, stage 2 Hotcam and that is everything except my twist throttle i email motion pro to see if they could make me one that one side will go into the 450r carb and the other into the 400ex turbo twist throttle. Do you know anywheres i can get a stage 2 Hotcam for cheap? or the bearings i need? i would like if i could find 1 place that has all the bearings so i can have combined shipping. so hopefully this will be back together before January is over well it should be because mostly all the parts are ordered :D

think these handlebars would look good on my bike? I think they look good. Are they pretty strong?

Speedy 400ex
12-27-2008, 12:29 AM
I have them on my bike and i like them...i havent rolled yet so i don't know how they will like it or not. but the have a little flex or give in them, which i personaly like. It makes the ride a little less rough. But just make shure they are for the trx's ones, because the bend i got where to short so i had to cram all the controls on. They should be the right ones from reading the listing though.

tyman2395
12-27-2008, 12:31 AM
ya i'm gonna go with them and hopefully i wont find out how strong they from rolling my bike lol

lilyamaharacer4
12-27-2008, 08:43 PM
They will work as long as you never roll it or hit anything, IMO they are a waste becuase you will have to replace them constantly. Just go buy your self a set of tag, renthal, or protapers. Much stronger and they will survive when you wreck.

tyman2395
12-27-2008, 08:46 PM
ya i want a kinda strong once in case i roll it lol i added a new thing to my list only need 56 more buck and can order them. NEW STOCK PLASTICS!!!!! I figure since i'm redoing my bike i need new shiny plastics :D

hey guys sorry i haven't really update you guys that much but i haven't really worked on the 400 because i've just got job at a grocery store and been working on the rm but now that i got a job it is 8$ an hour and i work mon-fri 3:30 to 9:30 and some weekends lunch til supper so in a week around 300. so hopefully i will have time to work on the 400 but ya heres the updates i dropped my cylinder off to get bored out, and just waiting for a pay check to order my swingarm kit. I am painting my a-arms with black gloss marine paint and my friends is doing it with his air sprayer. But i need help my bearings in my carrier wont come out it is a billet twin row carrier so whats any easy way to get it out?

cam19aro86
01-26-2009, 08:40 PM
Bake the carrier in the oven at 300 degrees for 20 minutes then just tap it and they will fall right out. Aluminum expands quicker than the steel which makes the bearings fall out.

sinces its all apart you oughta clean the little parts, such as that battery box, the more clean everything is the better appearence your quad will have when you finish it!

Hey man, looks really nice, you are doing a great job!

The only thing I see is that you need to start scrubbing eith Simple green and a toothbrush. Get that sucker spotless before putting it back together. It is the details that make the difference! Look at that pic of your front end and shocks, they are grimy, and really take away from the awesome job you have done with everything else!
