im looking at getting a nice camera for christmas. Something that can take actually good pictures and maybe some video (the digital camera isnt cutting it). I know absolutly nothing about cameras so can someone point me in the right direction? BTW i am looking to spend between 350-450$

I have a cannon rebel xt, and for the most part am very pleased with it. when i am not its usually operator error. It is a bit more than you are looking to spend though. This sounds like a question for pappy, he takes the best pics

you can get a refurbished one for in your price range
http://estore.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=156469&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=12163&top_category=12078

SLRs are the way to go but they are very expensive. it all depends on what you are planning on doing with the camera.

you can still do a lot with this camera for about half the price. But it all depends on what you plan on doing with the camera.

If you want to even remotely take "good" pics, buying an SLR is the only way to go.
You can pick up an enry level for a good price.
