i recently sold my 450r and now i want to get back into racing but im in the middle of transitioning in between sponsors so i dont want to buy a new machine and then switch or not end up getting sponsored if i buy the other machine. so i was thinking that i always wanted a 250r and if i build one during this transition i can race it. now my question is will it be competative??

thanx for any responcees

What kind of racing? I race my 95% stock 250R in hare scrambles here in FL and finish in 1st or 2nd every race in a 0-400cc class. I am slightly outrunning fairly stock 450s in the other classes that I come across on the course in open fields. I only have a 38mm PWK, ESR head, C-leigh ported stock jug, FMF fatty, and Boyesen rad valve.

There are soooo many variations of 250Rs out there it's hard to say yes or no. Most have too many mods to count which, if set up properly, will be extremely competitive.

yes they can be very competative.
these days you can buy mx ready 250r`s for very little cash.
get one with the right set-up and it will be a awesome racer.

i have also asked a question about this, take a look in this tread over at www.trx250r.net
then go to the "lounge" topic at the top, and then you will find a tread i made that is named: "250r racing machine ? *questions*"
hope this one helps :D

for some reason when i link it, it doesn want to show "R - C E N T R A L".
like this: :S

my power valve 265cc 250R has MORE than enough to keep up with any 450, stock or modded. as far as handling, the 250R still propably handles the best of any quad ever, its low center of gravity and light weight is unmatched.

Pfft. 250r's are weak, I wouldn't own one of those POS's! Like trying to polish a turd....:o

im gonna have to say a 250r could still race with any 450... in most cases... the only time a 4 stroke to me would have the advantage is when the jump is right square out of the corner.... all the tracks around me are more set up for a 2-stroke to me.. im sellin my yfz400 for a 250r...

i run a 250r racing flat track and i have been doing really well..They have plenty of top end, but if you plan on running motocross i wouldnt run a 2stroke..they just dont have enough low end for tight tracks.

i agree with out on the low end... you cant lug them very well... but the races i've been at the motor is always at the rev limiter... so i dont know how they are better....

I welcome all 450`s to try keeping with my 350 Sparks powervalve. They can not.... Torque is abundant as well. I own many 450`s as well. My 350R is the tops no doubt. As for not being able to produce torque.... That makes me laugh!

In my opinion you can't think an engine is more powerful that needs 450 cc's to compete in a 250cc displacement class.

4strokes definitely have their merits that make them good choices in cases, but raw power as the primary objective isn't one of them.

i see your point with the 250 and the 450 but i strongly think 4 strokes are over rated.... i liked my 250r way more than i like my yzf 400f... its prolly faster but its no where need the snappyness i want...

but to me nothing can replace the 250r... not untill they make a new chassie set up that is unstop able...

just like in any racing, its 99% rider then machine.A good running 250r with just a pipe can win on a mx track against 450s,its all on the rider. Most amateur riders around here at the local tracks have their tongues on the crossbar pad after 2 laps, only a few charge the whole race.:D I acn smoke ALL of my buddies with my 250r or 400ex,dont matter. It helps that i have been riding since 86 though:D

im gonna have to say the rider has to have a little back up from the quad or the factorys would be rollin on bone stock quads... but alot is the rider...
