im wanting to get a puppy and im not that particular on wat kind cept its not suposed to be a chiuhua(sp)typa dog i want somthing bigger but the main thing im concerned about is behavior,i want one that doesnt require 90% of my time and i want one thats on the good side with kids and a kind that aint to wild when young(i heard german shepards are a pain in the behind when theyre young and that they tear everythng up) i dont want one like that^.i know every young dog will do that wen theyre young if you dont train them but i would think theyre would be more mild manored kinds too though and im just wondering which ones they are

i can say that german sheperd are very destructive and playful when young. we have a 6 month old one now, lets just say, she prefers my etnies over my nikes :scary:
i kno you said you dont want a small dog but i love my daschund! she is tame and a great kids dog, we have 3 daschunds and every single one of them was a great dog for kids! the only bad thing is they are one of the hardest dogs to house train! but they are all sweethearts

they do look cute wen therye puppys but i want somthing bigger than that and it wont be inside so yeah but yeah them 2 are cute though

Ive always loved german shepards.

They may be a little wild at first, but as soon as you break their habbits, they're great dogs. Super loyal, will never leave your side, and as puppies they look like little teddy bears:D

We had a boxer too. He was definitely a little rambunctious dude. But when they get past the puppy age they are great dogs. They're EXCELLENT with children too. When I was small I would pull on his ears and crawl on him and he didn't mind and played along.

Pretty cool dogs.. I wish we couldve extended his life.. I miss him.:(

Here's the down right facts .... any puppy or dog will chew . Doesn't matter what kind of dog , you're gunna have something destroyed. I've lost shoes, pillows, comforter sets, sunglasses , etc. When they're teething they'll chew on anything ..... when they're bored they'll chew on anything also.

We have a Chocolate Lab , very mild mannered, loves to play and also loves to just lay on the couch and sleep. Always has to sleep on the bed with us at night and take up half the bed . Loses a ton of hair everyday .... I can vaccuum 3 times a day and there's still hair . But that's all that comes with owning a dog.

I wouldn't trade him for anything.

we have a golden retriever and a collie/ shepard and their puppy stages were the exact opposite. the golden was a little brat and the collie/ shepard was a breeze. the golden is 8 now and still can be a brat.. she has the perfect temperament though. both dogs are great with kids. the collie/shepard thinks she is a mother around babies though..:p
this is katy.. the picture kinda shows you what shes all about.

Oh ya ... a bored dog will also dig . When I leave mine outside during the day while I'm in class , I usually come home to him sleeping under the foundation of my garage.

Proof.

oh yea, forgot to mention that goldens and other labs would dig to china if they had the time. you have to watch where you walk in my back yard because there are random foot deep holes EVERYWHERE.

LOL . Mine just digs around the garage and sometimes in the middle of the driveway.

Last winter I bought him a dog house ,and being the thoughtful guys that I am, I figured I'd put styrofoam insulation under the dog house and on the inside walls to keep the heat in. MISTAKE !!!!

I got home from work one afternoon and the little bugger had tore up the styrofoam into a billion tiny little pieces. It was also a windy day so it was all over in my neighbours yards . Took me a few hours to pick it all up ... plus I looked like a fool chasing insulation all over the yards. Learned my lesson , now he's got no insualtion ... he can freeze. :p

I would get a doberman, they are loyal and listen VERY well. short haired and well mannered and they are good with kids too. My friend has a boxer and his girlfriend has a pitbull/boxer mix and I don't care for them to much, they constantly jump on you and shake around. My doberman's best friend is a 8 pound pomerian, I've had them all my life and won't have any other dog expect a doberman! :)

He is one of the biggest babies you will meet, very calm tempered. The only thing wrong with him is that he thinks he is a lap dog. If your sitting on a couch he will try and climb up on your lap. A lot of people sterotype them to be mean guard dogs.

My cousin just had a baby like 4 months ago, he has 2 boxers that are great dogs and are very cautious and friendly around kids. they are also very playful so if your looking for a dog to go places with, not just to stay in the house all day youll love em.

we had a golden and i loved him to death he was great as a puppy and even when older.(13 years just went by too fast) we now have a 7 month old yellow lab and he can be a PITA sometimes but 95% of the time he is good. the only problem we had with him when he was a puppy was he loved my moms fuzzy robe and in order for him to sleep he needed that. but now im getting into training him for hunting and is doing very well.

It wasn't too bad compared to my other ones, I'd suggest getting one atleast 1 year old or more if you dont have time to train it, dobermans only bark if they hear something or see something, VERY good watch dogs no doubt about it.. Mine has a docked tail but her ears weren't cropped. One thing I do suggest is the squeeker toys that are rubber, any stuffed animals or cloth toys dobermans usually rip apart in a heart beat lol.. If you have any more questions about the breed feel free to ask, we use to breed dobermans and at one time I had 10 of them running around my house.

As for being a pain in the arse lap dog, YES lol.. If your watching tv every doberman I've ever had will lay next to me and watch tv.

They sure love the water. Unfortunately our injured his leg running early in the spring and he had to take it easy all summer. I only allowed him to swim twice .

They're great aren't they? Ours sometimes thinks he's a small dog ... especially when we're watching TV and he crawls in between my girlfriend and I and plops himself down . Doesn't take long for your legs to go numb when a 70LBS lab is cutting off the circulation. LOL

Ours was 12 weeks when we got him . He was still a pup , but not the small pup like we wished he was ... like yours in your picture. He won my girlfriend's heart the moment she saw him though.

I got a golden retriever... Shes about 3 years old now... Best dog i've ever been around. Shes great with all kids, shes always happy to see people. She stays out most of the day, I just open the door, and let her run. Only problem i've had with this dog is the loss of socks. I've lost so many socks from this dog.. Most of them are scattered around the yard. She doesn't chew em up, she just keeps them around so when she greets you, she'll have your sock for you... lol.

And I read you were talking about the hair.. It really depends on the golden you own.. Some of them have real long hair, and some are a little shorter... But its really not to much of a problem. All dogs are gonna shed.

Heres (Shelby) as a puppy

boxers are cool dogs. they seem really laid back. but i have 2 chihuahua's they are sweet and fun. they bark only when someone comes to the door, but they are hard to train.

I dont know if somebody posted this or not I didnt read all the pages. I have a great dane and he is the best breed I have ever had. Even as a pup he has never been hyper active he potty trained really fast and kennel trained to. He only has one thing on his mind and thats chilling on the couch. To be honest he could care less if I pet him just as long as he gets fed. I have a 7,6 and 4 year old and they hang all over him,try to ride him ,steal his toys and he never bats an eye. The draw back to having a dane I think is his size, not full grown he his 38 inches to the shoulder and about 125 lbs. They dont make a kennel large enough for him so he chills in the house. He's always in the same spot I left him, on the couch, and he eats 40 lbs of food a week.

Have you decided yet?

If it's going to be in the house, a big factor may be whether its short haired and sheds ALL the time like my Lab or long haired and has 2 big sheds a year.

Something I didn't see suggested was a Shelty, sometimes Shelty Collie, or Shetland sheep dog. They are smart, mild tempered, fantastic family dogs and are mid sized and super cute.
