is this adapter necessary or can you just bore out the inside of the connecting tube to the carb?

It's not necessary, but it's a pain in the a@@ without it. It really makes the whole process a ton smoother.

I didnt modify anything and the carb slipped right on with some WD-40

The carb works without the adapter. But the stock aribox/boot has to be moved forward. The adapter allows everything to mount up and be in a "stock" position.
