On our farm we don't have many open shots. We mostly hunt thick woods.

You are correct, that gun is much older than he is but in excelent condition. His grandfather and I bought it for him when he was less than 1 year old.

Here's a good trivia question for yall....who can guess the caliber gun he is holding?

Thanks Pappy....holden loves looking at your deer pictures and will take that as a huge compliment.

Holden has been feeding the family now for about 4 years, he hunts all winter and fishes in the summer.

as for the gun....believe it or not it's a marlin .357 model # 1894. My father inlaw ran across it at a Yardsale in nashville Tn. It's perfict for hunting the thick woods we have in southern Ky.

.357....sweet! I have seen a few of those that friends use in cowboy action shoots. I have one in .44 that makes a killer brush gun for deer.

Alot depends on the weather, earlier in the bow season I was hunting in the upper 70's now this afternoon its only going to be a high of 30. This weekend for the opening of gun season they are saying it wont make it to 30.

Here is a better link on the buck they thought was going to beat the Field and Stream buck (actually green scored 198)

Some fine bucks taken so far!! Congrats!!

I saw a nice one this evening. 2 damn dogs came down a trail about a minute before the buck came down a holler infront of my stand. Id almost say he was looking for those dogs(thinking they were does) I grunted at him and he showed intrest but went on the way he was headed. Tomorrow is supposed ot be super windy so I will slip in and put up a stand in that bottom and see what he is if he comes through later in the week. Havent been seeing much, been so warm. We know they are here, see as many as 12-15 at a time bedded in a clover field well after dark, its just to warm for them to want to move. Now we have some cool weather and I dont know who will be rutting more, me or the bucks im after:devil: God I love deer huntin:D Rifle season starts next monday, followed by MD season the saturday after turkey day, then I am going bear hunting in early december!

I slipped out about 15 minutes ago to put a stand up in that bottom, and when I pulled down to the point on my Ranger, a small buck and doe stood up as they were bedded right behind another of my stands. So I ease forward and watch them walk off. Something caught my eye and about 15 yards to my right, the big 12 pointer stands up with a doe! They walked off but I just turned and drove away so I did not spook them. Looks like I will be living in a tree for the foreseeable future!

Oh man me too:p

I gave it about 30 minutes then slipped back down there and hung a climber. Id be in it if I didnt have to get Cody off the bus at 3pm. He can get his younger brother for the next few nights, I will be in that stand :D It is a killer spot, but I try not to hunt it much due to it being in a bottom where 3 finger ridges come together. The wind swirls etc. Im full scent-loc head to toe so we will see. You usually only get 1 chance at a big buck like this with a bow. Rifle season is just a few days away and i'll surely take him with a gun, but it will be much more satisfying if i can send a broadhead through him!

When your hunting big bucks with a bow, patience is a virtue. I can kill any deer I see with my rifle, it is something special when you take a big one with a bow. I had that buck at 25 yards tonight but no clear shot. His time will come.

My son uses a 7mm-08, fine round for deer

kbass...nice buck;)

oh yes the bow i shot my first deer with a bow at 10 she was a little over nighty pounds and ya know what , it ment more to me to shoot her with a bow than my biggest buck with my rifle, theres something about huntin with a bow , what kinda rounds do you guys shoot in your 7mm-08? i have weened my self of the balistic tip and have been experimenting with the partition the last few years.

theres alot of nice bucks in this thread so far, congratulations on all your kills.

but for the 7mm-08's my dad buys 140 grain Fusion bullets for my brothers gun, and lemme tell you they will do some damage. its not ballistic tip though. i cant think of the name of the tip but its comparable to the remington core lokt.

All I got this deer season was pissed off and cold. I saw one buck opening morning and couldn't shoot. We have a 4 points to a side restriction here. Not 5 minutes from seeing it, my cousin shot it as youth can shoot any size antlers. It was the biggest bodied deer I've ever seen, and so old it had no teeth left. It makes me mad, how shooting the bigger buck and leaving those scraggly things to populate next year does anything, I'll never know.

Im in 2C and it is also 3 on a side here but I wont shot any deer unless its at least 3 1/2 no matter how many points it has. I would say im generally happy with the antler restrictions. This past deer season I bet I saw over 15 bucks. Now some of them were smaller sixs and a few small eights, along with your spikes, fours and such. But I have also been seeing alot of bigger bucks. Genetics is a big thing when it comes to antler growth. But you cant overlook the nurishment factor when it comes to antler growth. We have been planting food plots and corn for years now and it is def payin off. I also think that on thing that is important is that you harvest your does. You need to have a good buck to do ratio on your property or the bucks will never get the nurisment they need. One rule of thumb that we stick by is we harvest 3 MATURE does for every buck.

I would say one of the biggest problems in PA is the hunters arnt willing to let the small six's and eight's that are 2 1/2 walk by. When those bucks get to be 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 they will be nice.

All you guys that are wondering how you can tell how old a buck is just by looking at it. It s really not that hard. A older buck has a hunched back and saggy belly. Plus u can tell in his face and the antler size. (thickness and tine length)

ANy of you guys that want to shoot some does ane are near 2C let me know. We could always use some help with the doe harvest

I'd definately be interested for late season muzzeloader. I haven't seen many large buck around so my buck tag has gone for does almost every year in the past 5 years.
