I should take some pics of the inside of my van, I forgot to mention what is in there! Two captain chairs up front and the rear is all bare except for the bolted in wheel hoop, ramps, and a winch mounted to the wheel hoop to pull in a bike or quad :)

I have the repair panels for the rust but need to find time to install them, and I might install the KC light bar back up front

Well technically the 6 lug 2500's are light duty 3/4 tons, or a heavy half ton, they come with stiffer springs and an extra leaf spring along with a factory towing package and a 14 bolt semi float rear end and either a 3:73 rear end ratio or 4:10. They also have bigger breaks and the gross vehicle weight is 7300 pounds rather than the 1500's 6500lb gross weight.
They also have external oil coolers.

You can swap most things off a 6 lug 2500 like the rear end to get the stronger 14 bolt and usually lower geared rear end ratio for better towing.

Also the 6 lug 2500's came with steel wheels from the factory not aluminum wheels. I just bought these off of a wrecked 1500.

that's all i know for know. you got any pictures of your truck?

the actual 2500 8 lugs came with 14 bolt full float rears and the same rear end ratios, but had much stiffer springs and a taller thicker frame and a 8600 gross vehicle weight and came with i think one more leaf spring than the 6 lug 2500.

basically the only thing a 6 lug 2500 and a 8 lug 2500 have in common is the badging.

EGR Cooler (twice)
EGR Valve
Oil Cooler
It's on it's 3rd alternator (and this one is squealing)
4wd engagement vacuum pump went out
Fuel/Water Sensor
Coolant resevoir, cap and lines
probably some other stuff I'm forgetting....

It's been in the dealer shop about 3 months over the past year. The last trip for the heads, I was driving a loaner Focus for 4-1/2 weeks. I've put another 2k miles on it since, knocking on wood.

Never again. I miss my old Tundra, but needed to be able to tow 12k lbs.

that theres our tow rig,2005 6.0 almost 110,000 miles had some oil leaks, and electrical stuff like it not doing a thing when you speed it up.oh and it has trouble starting some times and it starts like crap when its cold and runs like crap when its cold too.when it warms up its fine though and has pretty good power(bullydog chip).

QUOTE: What would you get if you had to do it all over again?

I've also got an F450 & F550 with the 7.3's, and those have been pretty reliable. I own a small construction company. If I could do it again, maybe I would have managed my towing needs with those and kept the Tundra. But at the time, I had 2 Bobcats, and a bunch of crap to haul around.

These issues I've had with this one are pretty common to the 6.0 powerchokes. I hear Ford is going away from the 6.4's they put in the 08+, because of issues and bad mileage. The older 7.3s are pretty proven, maybe shoulda got one of those.

I like the Duramax's, but my buddy needed a tranny in his '05 with 75k miles. I've heard that's common on those.

I wouldn't own a Dodge either. Just wish Toyota made a bigger Tundra with a diesel.

I love the Loadtrails! That triple is really too big though for what I need, and it eats tires. When I was doing a bunch of residential work, turning around in cul-de-sacs, or slow, tight turns loaded, the front and rear tires would just scrub. I've got another 18' (2) axle Loadtrail thats awesome and fills my needs. The triple is a 20', 21,000 lb capacity and I'm toting 10-12k, it needs to be hauling backhoes or something. My buddy has another smaller LT thats been good too.

Have the triple for sale if anyone is interested.

Glad your 6.0 is treating you reasonably well. Maybe mine was just bad luck, I'm disappointed though. The other common issue I've heard about is fuel injectors. Sounds like you might be starting to have issues with those.

Not bad at all. I wish I had a setup like that at 19. Lots of you guys have nice toys, and looking in the background of some of these pics, nice places too.

The 6.0 itself is a tough engine but ford is what hurt it. International built that engine to run about 215 horse. Ford got ahold of them and bumped them up to about 300. There you go having a modded truck from the factory pretty much. Then all of us go stacking boxes and programmers on top op them making them put out twice the power that engine was designed to. Thats where you get your trouble. Thats why in 05 International decided if ford was gonna up these engines in power they had to try to do their best to make them at least a little more durable. Of course your still gonna have your lemons. Ford chevy and dodge all have lemons

Yea mine is a 06' and i have not put a chip or anything on it just a cat back exhaust. I actually have the whole turbo back setup but i decided just to install the cat back portion to keep my 100k warranty. One of the big problems is the head studs are kinda week so when people chip them and boost like 40lbs you blow your head gaskets. I want to put in some ARP headstuds and a EGR delete, then it should be just as durable as the 7.3. Those are its two week points.

Agreed on the ARP studs and EGR delete. I had the heads done under warranty though, and the dealer would not stud it for me, even if I supplied them. I haven't had anymore issues yet, but it's only been 2k miles since.

The only problem is the studs are $450 and the EGR delete is $250 and i would like to do them both at once, i just dont have that cash right now.

I just got my truck out of the shop for EGR delete. I got my kit from First Coast Diesel, I highly recommend them. Throttle response is crazy now, so much better. I had an SCT with Cale's tunes on it, not sure if I am going to leave it stock or load the tunes back on it.

The 6 oh has its troubles, most problems come from the 03-04 model. Sorry to hear you've had bad luck out of your truck.

Here's a pic of my tow rig. Heaviest load it ever sees is a 450r :ermm:

I havent seen this thread in a while, but Im sure your talking about the 04 green DMAx on the trailer. Looks to me its set up for pulling, and if its anything like mine, which it is, The air intake and filter are behind the top right Headlight, which comes out with 1 L pin, and gives access to the air intake.

thanks man. My brother drives the 4door most of the time. I usually drive the reg cab but like said i cant find a pic of it. Same truck only 2 less doors. The chevy is a good friends truck. Its a pulling truck. Puts down 700 and some odd horse on the dyno with no juice. Boy this thing is a blast to play in. Nothing like walking a 7000lb truck all over the road while your rolling coal out the stack and destroying a set of meats

Here's our rig.
I made the trailer into a homemade stacker.
I can get 3 landsailers, my 400ex, wifes 250ex, daughters trx90, and son's little chinese50 inside, and still have room for the BBQ, fuel cans, firewoood, camping gear.

when all the toys are offloaded, the "Stacker" levels convert to dual, queen sized, bunkbeds and can sleep up to 4 adults, plus a couple kids on the floor.
Makes a nice "guest house" camper, LOL!

tri5ron
04-18-2009, 10:53 AM
Mileage ? you ARE kidding,... Right???
55-57 MPH = 8mpg
60-65 MPH = 6.5 mpg

Yeah, it's got a 454 Vortec, pretty much stock, with a 4" exhaust, and K&N, but I admit it's having to work well above it's intended capacity. I really wish it had a Cummins, and have considered doing a engine swap on it.

when going to the desert, we just take our time, and I keep a real close eye on temps, and dont push it too hard.
Suspension wise, I'm ok. it's got Rancho 9000's, Airlift air bags w/onboard compressor, 80psi "E" range Michelins, and a HD W/D hitch.
but motor and trans are certainly at their limits.

here's a pic of what all goes into the trailer.....
