Carlisle, IA – After months of preparation and anticipation, the 1st Annual GBC Heartland Challenge Presented by PIAA kicks off this weekend in Carlisle, Iowa, and we are excited to announce several new sponsors, and updated schedule of events, and some details on the course.

The GBC Heartland Challenge is proud to welcome Polaris aboard as a supporter of the event. Polaris will be donating a Polaris Outlaw 525 ATV to give away, and every hour during the 10 Hour ATV race on Saturday, Nov 8th, a key will be given out with a total of 10 keys handed out, but only one will start the Polaris Outlaw. After the completion of the 10 Hour ATV race, all the key holders will get their chance to start the Polaris Outlaw, and one lucky key holder will be taking it home.

Unlike the KYMCO Mongoose 90 ATV giveaway, which will be limited to just the youth ATV racer entries, the Polaris Outlaw is up for grabs for everyone in attendance including spectators and racers, but you must be present to win.

The gates are set to open on Thursday, Nov 6th, at noon, to allow everyone plenty of time to get setup, and also, Thursday at 4PM, all racers are invited out to downtown Carlisle for a media event with the local press in attendance as well as ATV magazine journalist.

On Friday, at 1PM, the Milwaukee Tool Pit Stop Challenge will kick off the racing with pit crews competing against the clock to change a front and rear tire on the same side of the ATV and also swap out the rider’s goggles and gloves. The fastest team will take home a two Milwaukee Lithium Ion V-18 Battery Operated Half-Inch Impacts used in the challenge as well as throwing in a Milwaukee Multi-Bay Charger with a total value of nearly $800.00.

The endurance racing starts on Friday at 4PM with the 3 Hour UTV race. The track is nearly 5 miles long with a great mixture of terrain taking racers through the fields and into the woods for some tight trails and hill climbs to provide some challenges, which will be even more challenging once the sunsets with the race ending at 7PM

The Youth ATV race will begin at 7 AM Saturday morning, Nov 8th with a 3.5 mile long track for our youngest competitors, which again will include some a great mixture of terrain for a fun race for all, and with the early morning start time, the youth ATV racers will also experience some riding in the dark with the race starting just before sunrise.

Finally, at Noon on Saturday, the 10 Hour ATV Race will start, and they have an exciting 8 mile long course, which includes the “Can-Am Challenge.” “We’ve got some pretty good obstacles out there in the “Can-Am Challenge” section. There are telephone pole and rock obstacles and we are still working on more,” said Kyner, who rates the technicality of the Can-Am Challenge section a 7 on a scale of 1-10. However, Kyner says not to worry, “We’ve created three lines going into and around the Challenge. One line goes straight in, another goes through what we have set up as a “Mini Challenge”, and the third goes up through a ravine, avoiding the Can-Am Challenge. That way riders have a choice to go around if they don’t think they can get through it,” stated Andy. The woods section of the track also promises to have a few surprises as well, including some mild motocross jumps and natural terrain jumps incorporated into the track.

The 10 Hour ATV race will concluded at 10PM, and the 1st Place Pro ATV Team & 1st Place Pro Utility ATV Team, will each receive $7,500 sponsored by GBC Motorsports, and rest of the Pro racers will receive a 100% payback. Also, the 1st Place Pro Am ATV Team will receive $3,000 sponsored by PIAA

Also, we are excited to announce that every amateur that finishes in the top three will receive a trophy, and the class 1st place team racer will receive a 4 foot tall trophy thanks to all the following class sponsors: Precision Racing, Burgard Cycle, PowerMadd, T&T Motorsports, C&D Racing, Rekluse, Shrum Racing, Holz Racing, Zbros Racing, Moto Pro Training, All Balls Bearings, and Tucker Rocky.

Beyond trophies, there are plenty of contingency prizes up for grabs to all the participants from the class sponsors and more with Shift Racing, Western Powersports, HMF, Tireballs, DP Brakes, KLIM, EVS, Hinson Racing, IMS Products, Race Tech Suspension, Custom Axis, ATVriders.com, and more all providing some valuable prizes and discount coupons.

Finally, for anyone who had concerns regarding having enough lighting in the pit area during the nighttime portion of the race, there will be plenty. One of the local high schools has donated their old football stadium lights that will be installed around the pit area to keep things well lit. Although the pit areas will be well lit, there will be sections of the track that will be quite dark and will require headlights. If riders are in need of lighting for their ATV or UTV, PIAA, C&D Racing and Trail Tech are all offering significant discounts for registered racers who will be participating in the GBC Heartland Challenge.

For those coming from out of town and who are not familiar with the Carlisle, IA area, there will be maps with directions to local restaurants, hotels and other amenities. The maps will be available at the registration booth. The GBC Heartland Challenge will be held in Carlisle, IA on November 6th-8th. For more information or to register online, please visit the GBC Heartland Challenge website at www.heartlandchallenge.com.

I just recieved a trackside update, and rain had hit the region overnight. However, strong winds have dried things nicely and right now, television crews re doing interviews with racers and demo's for them are being provided to demonstrate what the racing will entail.

I will be rolling out tonight for the long trek to Iowa! Good luck to everyone incase I dont get to tell you in person!

Back at the track, local television station, Channel 13, showed up early to check out the track and find out more about the event, and the video taped C&D Racing’s Colby Kostman riding both a Sport & Utility ATV, which will air on Friday.

2 Huge Tents arrived early in the week, which will house all the concessions for the event in one tent along with the GBC Tire Booth, and the other tent will be used for the Awards Ceremony and the Milwaukee Pit Stop Challenge, which will start today at 1PM

Racers will fist face a section of telephone poles, which will present a real challenge especially if racers don’t pick their line carefully

Admin
11-07-2008, 08:45 AM
The next challenge is a rock pile followed by a combination of rocks and telephone poles

Admin
11-07-2008, 08:45 AM
A tractor tire climb has also been added

Admin
11-07-2008, 08:47 AM
Also for the motocross lovers, we have added several motocross jumps to the track, but everything is fairly tame, but should provide some added fun

Admin
11-07-2008, 08:49 AM
Also, the track contains a great mixture of fields and woods section along with some hill climbs, and the great part is that the pits are centrally located spectators will not need to walk far in any direction to check different sections of the track.

Admin
11-07-2008, 08:53 AM
With parts of the race going into the night, lights will be required on all the ATVs and we also needed them in the pits, so the local football stadium donated their lights to the event on 75’ tall telephone poles, which will provide plenty of lights in the pits and ABC Electrical Contractors donated their time and equipment to raise these huge lights for the event and wire them up, which was a huge help.

Admin
11-07-2008, 08:55 AM
Also, special thanks to GBC Motorsports Kevin Johnston and the entire GBC Motorsports crew for all their help in making this event possible.

As things began to wind down last night, conditions were bit on the chilly side with strong winds that were actually blowing the snow sideways at one point. Although there were no accumulations, the snow that did fall quickly melted, creating muddy conditions out on the track.

In the Open UTV Class, Atwell & Picken Racing's grabbed the Win despite snapping off their front wheel in the final hour of the race, and the GBC Motorsports Team claimed the 2nd Spot (Kevin & Randy)

Despite the horrible conditions with the snow coming down side-ways the entire race, we considered it a success and looking forward to next year already.

Congrats Again to the Karst Wyoming Teams for claiming the top 2 Overall finishes.

GBC/ ATVriders racer Jarrod McClure got off to a slow start today but has been working hard and he and teammate Jeff Pickens are currently in third place overall.

Rick Cecco was towed into the pits with mechanical issues, and although Cecco was back out on the track in just a few minutes, it was just long enough for Polaris/Rath to catch up and take over the lead.

C&D Racing's Duane Johnson was also towed into the pits to change quads, but his down time has allowed the GBC/ATVRiders team to take over second place.

Woo Hoo! my fellow old fart buddies Nate, Jerry and Shawn take the 30+. Way to go guys. :macho We thought they should have ran pro-am, they're fast enough that's for sure. Props to Rath/Polaris for runnin that heavy beast to 2nd.

looks as though their were some sand baggers in the C class.....
the results show that they beat all B class teams and some of the
pro-am teams...
if your that fast you shouldn't be in C class...
congrats to everyone who raced...

Sandbagging..... wish there was a good way to eliminate it.

However, I honestly think I'm a B rider in Iowa but in Missouri I'm a C. :ermm:

For sure! It was great to see some Minnesota boys do good in a race like that. Maybe next year I can find some teammates and try it myself.

I agree 100% with ya....
at local races next year I plan on running B class...
however at the natoinal races I plan on running in C 24+ because the B class riders at the national level are way faster then the B riders at the local level... This is the only way I can be competative.. With that being said, if I go out and smoke everyone in C class in the first few races(not going to happen), I would move up to B class. Because beating everyone by 5 or 10 mins is not right to them. Having a chance to win is why everyone comes out to race... If you think you don't have a chance to win because of sandbaggers, people will lose interest and will stop racing..

Congratulations to the privateer, two man team of Jeff Pickens and Jarrod Mcclure. They finished second overall. They rode the same quad for the entire 10 hours with only one chain adjustment needed. Great Job Guys!

I am pretty sure ANDY had nothing to do with scoring and the posting of any results.

Thanks to everyone that put this awesome event together. Even with the freezing weather, I had a fantastic time.

I really felt sorry for some of the teams that had no trailers or campers stay in when they weren't racing or crewing. The only thing that was cold on me was my fingers which are swollen and hurt like hell today and my nose. I took a twig across my nose one time, ouch!!! Oh yeah, my butt froze too after I ejected and my jersey came untucked and my pants slid down as I was racing. Other than the weather, the race was awesome and alot of fun. Everyone that didn't go really missed out.

Harlen, thanks a lot for helping to bring a great event like this to our community. Now we can hopefully be known for something other than those damn septuplet kids, lol. The track held up very well considering the weather and the track was alot of fun.

My rectifier went out after the 7th lap, it was shooting 42 volts to my electrical. DirtWorks did everything to fix it and get me back on the track but the back up rectifier wasn't shooting any volts.... Lighting has been my biggest problem, no lights, no ride! The track desentigrated badly, the down hill breaking bumps were terrible. I got stuck on center ruts several times, smacked a ton of trees, climbed a tree with one front tire and about flipped over, and my chain popped off once. I'll come back in 2009 and try again one last time then I'm retiring. I want to say a big thank you to the DirtWorks team and Shrum racing for all their help in the pits!

Chance Kellison and Dakota Stevenson got out front in the youth race on Dakota's quad from the beginning and stayed there the entire race even after the break down and tow in. They had to finish over have the race on Chance's sister's stock 90. This was officially Chancers last race in the mini ranks and will run the full season in the junior/schoolboy class in 2009 on his raptor 250. He was thrilled to go out with such a bang.

Now on to the big quad race. Taylor raced with Brandon O'neill and Saige Johnson as Sudden Impact. Tay went first. She got the holeshot on her class and put the moves on her Dad's teammate Miles to make the pass on the entire +40 class also. She said she was feeling awesome and putting some ground down when she threw her chain without completing a lap. She gets towed in and we had to deal with a emotional breakdown but her teammates picked up the slack until she was able to recompose herself. They were able to hold on and with the Kymco team having issues were able to make up the time and take second place in the schoolboy class.

Johnny teamed up with Miles Harris and Ron Mueller in the +40 class as the Banned Loslers. They had a good race with only one flat tire and really no other issues. They had a several lap lead when Homer came in for what could have been his last lap. His teammates told him they had already won the class but I told him to go back out and take the checkered.

So we had a great time and came home with 2 first place trophies and one second place. We had an incredible time, even with the horrid weather. I really hate the cold and am looking forward to next year with the plans for August.

Thanks to everyone that put on the event and to all my families teammates and their families, we had a great day.

Shrum Racing had a fantastic day! We had a morning team racing "Boyz fron Illinoiz" who took 2nd place...Great job guys, you really put on your game faces and gave it everything you had. I am very very proud of you Brian, Josh, and Alex. Great race!

Our afternoon racers, DJ, Devon, and Ronnie; raced in the Pro Am class - they rocked! They came in first in their class and fourth overall. Way to go boys! We had no trouble with the quad that they rode - but the track deteriated thanks to the rain and snow. I guess we will unload the quads and assess the damage later on today. I don't think anything is broken, but we'll give them a once over to make sure.

We bought a 9" H.I.D. light from Harbor Freight. This thing was awesome. Donnye fabricated a nice bracket customized to the quad and it held up fantastically. Best of all, the entire set up only costed $120.00. I was impressed.

Thanks to everyone who put so much effort into this Great race. We had a blast and fully intend to run it again next year. Hope everyone is recovering from the bitter cold.
