I drilled 8, 3/4" Holes in my airbox lid and then got a little nervous about getting mud and water in the intake on our last mud ride, so I came up with a temporary way to plug the holes if you think you are going to get real muddy/wet. Being an Electrician we sometimes use Knockout fillers in panels, they come in assorted sizes and are metal or plastic. They clip in the hole and hold tight. After the ride I just popped them all out and I will keep them in the little toolbox just so they are handy.
Thomas & Betts makes the plastic ones I used.

duct tape works well.
just remember that if you have jetted your bike to run right with the increased air flow the holes provide, blocking the holes may create a rich condition.
