just the normal wear and tear. Sometimes crank bearings go out, but you cant really check that on a used bike. Flip it on its grab bar and make sure its straight.

Pull the air filter off and check the inside of the boot for dirt... This goes for any quad you buy.....

like he said....but these motors are noisy to begin with, just like the 250r was.

Rear Axle bearings. To check grab the rear grab bar and jerk side to side on it. There shouldn't be any movement at all. . . Whenever you buy a used bike there will usually be a lot of stuff rigged by the person you bought it from. I always check everything out before I take it out for a ride. All oil and fluids, bearings, and filter.

I am really leaning towards a 450r too when tax time comes. Are there any majors issues with any certain year?

My friend, that very question has perplexed mankind since the invention of the gasoline engine. We may NEVER know!!!!!!:D

cracked frame especially right in front of the upper subframe mounts. Make sure the tubes aren't split.

Stay away from any ER's. Just search around on the 450r section. All the lazyasses who wanted something convenient got the opposite. And the 06's have transmission problems. Any other year kickstart is good.

I prefer the kick start anyway

I like my ER. I did have a recent issue with the battery failing. I do wish I would have bought the Kick Start more that I can even tell you.

I looked at used bikes but couldn`t buy one, too much of a risk buying a used 4 stroke....for me anyway.

If you take the time and become an informed buyer then buying used can be a HUGE savings. There are nice used quads to be had and also some real heaps as well.

I agree, I have bought about 60/40% new/used bikes in my lifetime.

This time I just decided to go new after a long search through a lot of patched and clapped out 450Rs.

I always am a big fan of buying used if it is an option, on cars, houses and bikes etc...

It can be a crap shoot at times. I have been burnt a few times.

well I ended up up buying an 05 450r. I looked it over for about two hours LOL. The guy was busy with someone else so I had lots of time. The only thing wrong with it is he dumped it over on ice and cracked the rear fender. I would guess there can't be much more than 100 hrs on it. Other than the crack there isn't any scratches in the plastic. The paint isn't even wore off the frame or engine where your feet touch. Still has the stock tires on and they aren't even half wore out. Came with a DMC alien pipe and a brand new in box stage 3 big bore kit (which would make it a 527 I guess). He threw in a set of ITP rims and some off brand paddle tires. I am pretty excited to ride, too bad I work all weekend.

I will be looking at 04's and 05's for what I can spend so I hope I get a decent one.
