I am repacking my White Bros E-Series. Anyone know what size the rivets are? Everything I am finding a the harware store is too small. I'd thought about screws instead, but really don't want a screw vibrating out and puncturing a tire on the trail. Any ideas?

Thanks

I was going to suggest to contact white brothers but i forgot they went out of business or got bought out or something. I need to know too so this can be a bump

Anyone try machine screws instead of rivets? If so did you have any problems with them vibrating out?

my buddy has a pro circuit t4, i cut it into a shorty and instead of installing rivets again, i put in self tapping screws. works good.

I tried screws in my exhaust and they they keep falling out so we riveted it and haven't had a problem since.

I don't know what sized I used.. but I found a ton around the garage that fit reall nicely.. you know they go in loosly, then when you use your rivet gun it tightens it up.. right?

I've used pop rivets many times on other things. I was looking to see if anyone knew the proper size and grip range of the rivets before I drilled mine out. I have a riveter that will handle up to 3/16". The existing rivets seem to be either 3/16" or 1/4". If 3/16" rivets will work, then I'm cool and can get the silencer repacked before I go riding this weekend. If they are 1/4" I would need to get a new rivet gun, etc...

Sorry for the confusion.

we use 3/16 for an HMF, E series, and evo x limited.

Excellent! Thanks! Sounds like I'm good to go.

ETA: Just finished repacking. Boy, did it ever need it. There was a big section in the center where all of the fiberglass was completely burned out. I don't think the previous owner ever repacked the silencer. BTW 3/16" was right on the money!

I picked a manual riveter at Harbor Freight for less than $7. It also came with an assortment of rivets including 3/16". It seemed to work pretty well.

As for the silencer, I recommend spraying both ends with some penetrating oil or WD40 after you drill out the old rivets. Mine was pretty caked with carbon build up, which made the ends more difficult to get out. Once everything was apart, I scrubbed all the mating surfaces with a scotchbrite pad to clean off the crud. It made re-assembly much easier.

I just repacked mine last night, my packing wasnt too bad but sunday at the dunes 2 of the rivets broke loose so the end cap was hangin there and the packing came out in a big ol mess. so now its got 6 rivets holding it together. I wasnt sure what size they were either so I just bought a box of 3/16 and they worked great

You don't need a certain kind just a 4-stroke packing.

Don't use aluminium rivots, use the steel ones, huge difference.

I just used some standard FMF four stroke packing...the white sheet/pad or whatever you want to call it. Just trim it to fit the core, wrap a piece of masking tape around the end of the packing so that it doesn't catch on things, and then slide the core and packing into the can.

The original rivets are steel. Mine were all rusted and looked ugly. Aluminum rivets are softer, so I suppose there is the possibility that they could break, but they also don't rust. I haven't had a problem with them breaking so far. If they do, I suppose I may have to go back to steel rivets.

Can you still use the hand tool to put them in?

Yes. They also have hybrid rivets half and half. I'd rather have the aluminum ones if they didn't break.

I dont understand the tape idea, do you remove the tape or just leave it in the muffler? I guess it will make more sense once i take it apart. Do you just use a drill to get the rivets out?
