What are most guys running for trail riding? What are the benefits of each?

Sorry for all of these questions, but I am just getting into riding and want to gather as much info. as possible. Thanks.

not sure of the reasoning, but gncc riders use 9" rims....
mx uses 8".

they use 9 inch for trails becuase you get better ground clearance and usually the 9 in tires have higher ply rating meaning they are tougher.
But dont get me wrong you can still do tons of jumping ect.

Im pretty sure the 9 and bigger wheels are used for trail riding because of the taller tire choices, and taller tires mean more ground clearence, which is why GNCC and trail bikes have the bigger rims.
