i dont quite get this part of a movie?

i was watching full metal jacket and near the beginning when you got the sargeant bi*ching out all the recruits, you hear joker say "is that you john wayne, is this me" and the part i dont get is was that supposed to be funny? and if so why? i mean i want to think it is but he didnt say it in a funny tone or anything thats why ive got my mind wrapped around it..... so im just cruious

lol, yeah i pretty much get everything else, its just that this whole john wayne thing was a little before my time, so i dont know if this was a quote off some western or the comedic intent of it or what....

It's a direct reference to the Movie "Sands of Iwo Jima" where John Wayne playes the Drill Instructors counterpart Sgt. Stryker.

I'd highly reccomend watching Sands of Iwo Jima. Great movie.
