View Full Version : Why are Raptor 660's so affordable?

I am in the process of selling my 400EX and a possible buyer asked why he should buy my 400 when he can get a Raptor 660 for the same price.
I didn't believe him but checked ebay and saw he was right.
There are nice condition Raptor 660's for less than $2500. They are pretty much selling to the equivalent price of a 400EX.

Is there something I am missing here? I always thought the Raptors were more in line with a 450R which seems to hold a higher value than a 400EX. ????

Just curious.

i would consider them on par with one another. i would rather have the 400ex myself. they handle better, are lighter, and will last 3x as long. the prices of raptor 660 are down because the new model (raptor 700) have been out for a couple years now

I see.
I am just thinking, man I should have bought a Raptor 660 instead of my EX last year! lol

I just got an Outlaw and am pretty excited about the IRS.

One thing is.. If you plan on racing.. If you buy a 660, you HAVE to race with the big boys as most are by CC. That is why the 400 is popular.

had a 440ex as my first quad than sold it and bought a 660r with no regrets i would do it again if i had to cuz the power is amazing yes the 400 may handle better but it all up to what you like power or handling

Yes, but does it not cost less to build power than handling????
;)

Depends on what you're looking for for each..

Handling.. A set of A-Arms and Shocks can run you any where from 800-2500... A power upgrade can be from 300-999999 lol.

Because the old style(01-05) raptors handled very poorly. They were narrow, very top heavy, and had little ground clearance. Its also a heavy slow reving motor.

I rode a Raptor today, an 02 660. It was stock and had enough power but I was expecting more pull. If it revs slow then it's okay because it felt like the torque made up for it.. it felt better short-shifted in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

It wasn't tippy when I was sliding it around a muddy field in 3rd and 4th either.

I'm thinkin that depends on what level ya want to go to. A 400ex will never reach the kind of power ya can get out of a 660, but it'd take quite a few dollars to make a 660 handle like a 400ex too... LOL

I'm in your league..., (2old2race), but drag racing only takes a few seconds! hahaha

I like the power of my 660's!

I agree with one of the other guys. the 660's are priced lower now because of the 700's being out for a couple of years. I went from a blaster to a DS650 (bombadier) to a 660. love the 660 mad power and easy to manuavor on the trails. I had the 660 for three years now I'm ready to upgrade to a 700. tired of the carbs.

Only the '01 models had tranny issues.. It was a ratio issue between 1st and 2nd gears.

Search around this site and especially a t v connection and you'll see all year 660's had tranny issues. It was just much less prominent in the 02-05 models.

I know this thread is a few months old, but I will chime in. The 660 was cheaper that time of year because of the time of year. Almost everything was cheaper because people were not buying much. The 700 did decrease it a little.

I see a lot of people comparing the 700 and the 660. I own both and I don't think the 700 is that big of an improvment. I actually find myself on the 660 more than the 700.

I had 2005 craptor to tippy, to heavy, no power for racing good trail bike all way getting pulled out of the woods . I went out and got 06 TRX 450R I WAS ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THE BUILT BIKES.

The 2001 was known for tranny problems. 02-05 had tranny issues as well, just not as bad as the 01. 01-05 all had the starter clutch problem. Typical Yamaha. Just about all of thier sport ATVs have some sort of issue like that.

The Raptor is a very tippy bike. It has decent power in a straight line, but it's handling is way down. You can put a stock 660 and a stock 400EX in trails and I bet the 400EX will post better times just because is handles so much better.

I am not going to sit here and keep knocking the Raptor. I like the Raptor. It really fits a bigger guy well. It has good power, it looks cool as hell. I think it has gotten a bad rap because when it came out in 01, all the magazines went on how it was the perfect quad and it simply isn't. At least it isn't in a lot of peoples opinion.

The 660's were just a stepping stone for the 700 and left an awful lot to be desired. They aren't worth much that's why cheap prices. To many faults.
