I am looking for general opinions on if you have a PVL and if you think it makes enough of a difference to justify the cost, any info will be appreciated.

Yes in my opinion a PVL makes all the difference. With the realiabilty, proformance gains, adjustabilty, and most of all elminating the whole wiring harness. Is worth it's weight in gold. We have 3 PVL's running and never have had a problem with them once their set right.

I normally recomend pvl as your last performance upgrade. We do run pvl on our top 2 nat. 90 engines, but the gain is minimal. Our 90 cc drag engines are all still stock ignitions tuned to the engine combinations and are winning races. Hope this helps.

are they complicated to get set right or is it plug n play?

The wiring is simple color coated plug in. But you will need a top dead center gauge that will screw into the spark plug hole. If you have an air cooled cyclinder youwill need a short TDC. If you have a water cooled engine you will need a long TDC gauge. The gauge costs between $40.00-$130.00. I made my own. You will need to manualy time the motor. Then set the adavance or retard in the timing (which ever you want) but remember your timing is set to the thousandth. 20,000 30,000 etc. PVL comes with complete directions on installion and performance hints. the new digital PVL is the best choice , it is improved version of the regular PVL, more adjustability and easy install. And the price has come down to the same or cheaper than the plain PVL. comes complete with instructions , hi-output coil and cdi, very trick anodized billet construction. NICE !! I will post some pics tommorow.

The diff between stock ign and the PVL is the center mounted flywheel as opposed to the outer type flywheel.
The inner creates rpm's faster and will shut down faster.
Like mentioned, a final option IMO.
Would that help you is the question. :)

if I understand this correctly it looks like you will also shave off alot of rotating weight on the engine by replacing the stock flywheel with this one.

Flywheel weight is not alway a bad thing......

PVLs are do help clean up the wire harness and provide a strong spark though

flywheel weight is a pro in most cases..i make fan/waterpump adapters out of different diameters of 6061 and sometimes even steel depending on the amount of flywheeling that is desired.
