Hi Folks,

I'm brand new to ATV ownership and figured why not kick it off with an ancient 230 Quadsport. I actually picked up a couple of these units for short money and am curious as to what I can expect out of them. I was hoping you folks here could give me some guidance with the following issues:

I understand these things smoke a bit, but how much is 'normal'? Here's a couple shots of the one that still runs smoking at startup (choke is on):

(If the photos don't appear in the post, I'll try and attach them afterwards)

I'm thinking this isn't considered 'normal' and that this machine is due for a set of rings. Any other problems that would cause this or is it most definitely just rings?
I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I'm willing to dive in and try to do this stuff on my own. I've got the manual and some tools - why not!?
I figured I'd try to change these out anyway to try and avoid a catastrophic failure.

Speaking of which....

I have a 2nd one of these quads that isn't running. It experienced something of a catastrophic failure along the way (not sure how or when). Here are some pics of it:

As this thing failed, it looks like the crank might have been hit. I couldn't get a real good shot of the gouges in it, but it looks like the piston crashed into it and marred it up a bit:

Is this even usable anymore? Does it need to be perfectly balanced or is this something I could try and shave down and reuse?

Also, does this look normal? Please remember I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure if the crank bearing is supposed to look off center as this does:

I've cleaned all the chunks out of the bottom end of this motor. I'm going to need to pick up a puller to get the magneto off (any suggestions where I can get one?) and then get into the case.

Is any of this still usable?
Do I need a complete new crank? (I know I need a connecting rod)
Should I even bother with this?

Thank you in advance for any assistance with this. I've got plenty more photos and questions if anybody's interested in reminiscing about these old bikes a bit.

Take care~
