I bought this 06 450er a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't ran well (backfiring and not holding an idle) since I bought it.

I have taken the carb off and there is varnish all over this thing. What's the best way to get it clean.

Is there a solvent that will take it off?

best carb cleaner to use is 2+2. i will take anything off. but you have to go to an auto parts store, i always go to napa for that. im not sure if advance or places like that have it or not.

Before I cleaned the carb it was backfiring bad on decel and would not hold and idle.

Now after cleaning, it has a good idle and is popping/backfiring on decel. It has a full Big gun exhaust and the lid is off the airbox. I set the pilot screw at 2 3/8. It currently has a 50 pilot jet in there now. Do I need to go to a 52?

What else should I check?

What main jet do you have? and put your needle on the fourth clip down and see if thats any better.

Also, what/how did u clean your carb? cause i need to clean mine cause mine wont start by kicking but will start if i pop start it...but when it does run after popping it,it doesnt idle or move.

A 50 pilot is already on the large side for an 06 450r. Should be way more then enough. What main jet are you running?
Either the carb is lean somewhere else or it needs to be cleaned better.

OK, I turned the pilot screw out 1/2 turn and that has almost cured the problem.

Took it out for some riding and there seems to be dead spots upon accel. Do I have to roll through the entire throttle.

I didn't have time to check the main but I will as soon as I get a chance. I hope I just need a bigger main. It does seem lean if I accel to fast.

If its bogging when you stab the throttle you most likely need a larger leak jet.

Pick up a #55 leak jet and slap it in there.

Ok, here's the deal now. I have placed the 55 leak jet in there. I also had a chance to see what main was in there. It is a 180. From what Im reading is that too big.

So:
50 Pilot
55 Leak
180 Main

Whats the opinion.

Yeah a 180MJ in an 06 bike is really rich. Should be closer to 160-170 range.
I'd say start with a 165 and see how it does.

I went down to a 170MJ and am definitely headed in the right direction. I may have to drop 1 or 2 sizes down more.

Thanks all that have helped me. Huge difference from a week ago.
