other than ground clearance what are the advantages to it?

Puts the power to the ground quicker. Daryl Rath did a no-link setup on his 07 Honda TT quad.

Correct. It's a more direct of placing weight/powere directly to the ground, rather than it going through a linkage system. Is a tad rougher ride in my opinion though.
