I bought a used trailer and it could use some new boards and a coating to prevent further rust would be nice too.

So there is some surface rust and I want to coat the frame with something that will not chip.

what would be my steps to doing this?

Shall i sand down all the rust first THEN coat it?

yes you should sand the rust off first, if not you will be wasting your time. the rust will continue to grow underneith what ever you coat it with.

Run a search for a product called POR-15

It works wonders on this type of thing!

I will second the POR 15, used it, it worked good, not real expensive. Also, you might just contact a local line-x or rhino dealer. Angle iron would be a breeze to work on for them and if they ever get slow they might cut ya some slack on the price.

hey talking about this. I have a ford w/ the 7.3 diesel, its oil pan is rusting. If the pan has to get replaced you have to pull the motor. Will that stuff work on an oil pan since it gets hot?

So I started the tear down and started my first day of sanding the rust. Holy crap is this going to take LONG. Worked for 6 hours and only got a little less than 1/2 of the trailers TOP part done.

What tools do you guys recommend using to blast away to rust? I was using the wheel with wires on it and the paint and rust removing wheel.

also any ideas for making a fold up ramp would be appreciated!

Will ONE QUART be enough for this trailer? It says:
# Pint = 50 sq. ft.
# Quart = 96 sq. ft.
# Gallon = 350 sq. ft.

I think I may go for Chassis Saver instead of POR-15 since they do the same but cost slightly less.

Turns out I actually don't have to completely remove all the rust, just the flaky rust and the leftover paint. Puts me at ease now :o

Used to work at Mother's Speed Shop and sell POR 15. I think it stands for Paint Over Rust or something of that sort. Just sand off the really rough stuff and paint over the rest. The chemicals actually bond to rust better.

The lazy mans paint

How do you guys get the paint off? The previous owner painted the trailer i guess because the riveted manufacture trailer plate was painted over.

I wire brush doesnt do much, I have to use the angle grinder but thats still hard. I poured some paint thinner on there and it helped only a little (its hard to do the sides since it just drips to the ground). I also used some brake fluid. With those two combined and the heat from the grinder, it made this gooey/rubber like substance with the paint, but still the paint remains on there. Is there anything i can paint over it or spray, then wire brush it off? Or should I say the hell with it and give it a nice sand and just put the chassis saver on it?

At home depot there's some paint remover in a spray can called orange citrus paint remover, I use that on stuff like old 3 wheeler gas tanks, frames etc. just spray it wait about 15min. then spray it off with the hose.

Thanks for the info. I will stop by Home depot again for wood and the orange citrus.

Anyone have mounting ideas to store 2x12 ramps under the trailer? What hardware to use? All I can think of right now is those "L" brackets

This is what Im talking about:

I already got the paint off but it takes real long with the small edge of the angle grinder. I just hope the bottom is easier...
