Check that link out. I had no idea this thing was being built in the first place. "Man made black hole"? Seriously?! Why in God's name would you want to cut that thing on? I'm gonna start appreciating everyday from now until they turn that thing on. Believe that

Its not a "time machine", its not gonna somehow make all of us appear in the 60's, what it Will do is replicate seconds after the big bang, and we could possibly find new particles. As for black holes, this is going to be too small to make a black hole big enough to suck us in, and if it so happened to make a small one(very unlikely) it would vanish as soon as it appeared. Correct me on the things im wrong about, because i havnt followed it closely so this is what ive gotten so far, But i do know that this thing isnt made to create black holes...

You know, I'm not the type of person who believes that the world is supposed to end in 2012, but I am starting to accept the possibility. That thing has made me nervous ever since I first read about it. I'm gonna guess they get it "perfected" in 2012 though :eek2:

This stuff scares the crap out of me too.. you can't just say "if it ever appears it will just vanish". Even the smallest of blackholes can be disastrous, and there's nothing we can do about it, because we know absolutely nothing about blackholes, except the fact that they suck in everything around them, that includes light.

Science combined with thirst of power and knowledge will get us in big poo poo someday....

If this thing really works, Can we put the politician's and these big wig bank executive's in it ? So we never have to see or hear them again.

There is something like that in Batavia Illonios too. The "Fermi Lab" or something. I took a field trip there my senior year for chemistry.

The small black holes appear for seconds and disappear.

Could of swore that the first attemp was a few weeks ago and it was successful.

The only thing you should be worried about is why America is dumping so much money into this and yet our country is going down the tubes.

09-26-2008, 12:59 PM
if you think this thing is going to destroy the world, you need to grow up.

The only thing to worry about is... if this thing works, and correct me if I'm wrong, that it proves the big bang theory. Which would prove religion false. I would be more worried about the crazy relgious nuts going insane than a blackhole thats gonna last .2 seconds.

ya know what id find funny actually. if they designed this spent all the years on it. and ofcourse they take the precaution of being far enough away so if anything does go wrong. and they have camera and equipment ot watch it later to see how it worked and etc. and that small blackwhole does fomrm. and the camera and all get sucked in. and right after it closes.

:p

We know lots of stuff about black holes. They are extremes of mass compacted into a very small space. They are so dense and massive that they have extreme gravitational pull that nothing can escape. To create a real black hole, you would have to take more than all the mass in our solar system and make it about the size of a basketball. I don't think this machine is designed to do that. Just guessin', though. Maybe it has some way to make our entire solar system collapse with a couple of particles they are moving at high speed.

I betcha way more people will die in quad and dirt bike accidents from this site than will ever be effected by the big new particle accelerator.

oh, and its first run was a SMASHING success...no black hole was created.

No no no. All their intelligence, the years and years they spend studying and researching, all their doctorates degrees in particle physics, all useless bunk.

The people in THIS thread are right, it's going to cause the world to end...

not knowing much more than what wikipedia tells me, i see this as a device that will define the most optimal molecules to create the largest reaction/explosion.. thus the most optimal bomb could be created.

goverments paid large sums of money for this and they will be out to get their money's worth.

Yeah I just read "man made black hole" and that scared the **** out of me. My dad is a science geek and he said the same thing, that there is nothing to worry about. That is as long as everything goes all niffy dandy. He claims that if there's one thing not right, it could all go wrong. Not necessarily for the world but for a large area around the thing. I guess kinda like a nuclear melt down in a way.

Um - better than fission/fusion devices that can destroy half a state and fit 10 of them with tracking devices that allow pinpoint precision into a missile that pretty well cannot be intercepted successfully????

Yeah. They're looking for weapons to advance a science that advanced so far that the weapons themselves became useless - because if used they WOULD destroy the world.

No. I think they really are doing this for the science. But don't let me dissuade you from keeping your tinfoil hat on.

no need to be snide.. and of the comments made here about black holes etc. you decide to call me out over a more rational possibility??

are they developing weapons.. no the device isnt about that, but weapons can(and likely will) be developed from the science thats learned.

http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/aureview/1984/jul-aug/roberds.html

perhaps youd better do more reading on the subject of super-colliders, particle accelerators, particle beams and their history before poking at my foil hat.

until then go pick on the black hole doomsday theorists.

How am I wrong? There is no possible way for the Earth to form from atoms smashing or w/e and life forms to develop from that. Things had to be put here to start and thats where God comes in. Evolution is there but there is no way humans were once moneky's. If that was the case then why are there still monkey's and how are there different races of humans?

It's all about mutation, snakes evolved from lizzards, and there are legless lizards not technically snakes that prove the link. Yet we have snakes and lizards, not every single one evolved into snakes. One mutated, and it survived, and proved to be a good trait.

Same with fish to amphibeans, the sealacanth a fish found with legs prooves that they evolved from one another, yet we still have fish. Not every one mutates and evolves at one moment, now that would be an act of god. It was just one mutation that survived and reproduced, and the trait got passed on and changed over time. They adapt as needed and evolve in regards to environment. It is all well documented.

I'm not doubting the existance of a god or supporting evolution though, personally I think it is all like that episode of south park. Earth is just some reality television show for aliens.
