I am looking to get a slip on exhaust.....I see alot out there and wanted to know if i buy an aftermarket slip on...no particular brand in mind yet but something reasonably priced, will i have to rejet the carb??? I see some for sale with a rejet kit and some that will just slip on without a jet kit. What is the real answer...can i get a slip on for better sound and performance without rejetting???

no matter what you have to re jet. each pipe will take different settings to jet. some may even come with a jet kit, but not sure what brands may do that.

That is what i thought.....i am so confused now after reading up on it and cant understand why some manufacturers would sell a slip on without the jet kit included.....At this point just yank the spark arrester out of the stock exhaust to make it sound better at this point!

the reason why the companies dont supply the kit is because it will just cost you extra to pay for it. and they would have to ahve a deal with a company that makes them. and some slip ons you dont need to have a full jet kit, which replaces jets and needles, you may just need jets. I am running a HMF sport slip on and all i did was get a bigger jet for the main and pilot.

This is it exactly. Jetting is affected by a variety of factors including altitude, ambient temperature, other mods, etc. If exhaust companies supplied "proper" jetting, it may not work for all customers, leading to even more hassle and issues.

A lot of times a slip-on will only require a main jet swap and possibly moving the needle clip or adjusting the air/fuel screw. It is simple to do to be completely honest. I added a slip-on and a K&N and went up one size on the main (148 to 150) and one clip lower on the needle.

I took out the the baffle in my stock exhaust and it ran horrible, you would need to re jet with the baffle out too, and the sound of the baffle out is annoying, get a slip on!! It will sound and run better.

I was leaning towards an HMF? A bit tight on funds so trying to get a decent one that sounds a bit throaty and will add a tad of performance.

Thanks elmer....so if i go with the HMF slip on it better come with a jet kit...If not look for one that does? How hard is it to rejet a carb?

If you use the jet that comes with the pipe its pretty simple, some ebay stores sell the HMF with a jet kit but if you buy a dyno jet kit it can be a little harder and takes more time because you have to change the needle in the carb which forces you to take off the plastics and gas tank.

the HMF doesnt not come with any jets. and as stated earlier, you may be able to find one with a jet kit, but it will be more expensive. you can buy a jet kit separate, which comes with pilot and main jets, needles, and a few other small things, i think( never bought one). you can get by just buying a jet ( about $5) and adjusting air fuel screw, and moving the needle.

as for how easy it is, it is fairly easy. you need to take off your carb, and to change out the pilot, the bowl has to come off. the main jet can be gotten to by a little bowl nut thing that can be unscrewed. i do not know about adjusting the needle, i do not know about that.

if anyone notices any mistakes in what i just said, please correct them. im tired and was very distracted when i wrote this.

My 400 has the stock pipe but my buddies HMF he got from some store on ebay came with 1 main jet, he never had to change his pilot. Changing the main jet is simple because the carb can stay in it, you just need to remove the big but on the bottom of bowl, and when u take it off there is a whole you can stick a socket in ( i think its like a 7 MM) and remove the main jet and replace it with a new one.... o yea make sure that gas is off if you ever do this!

Thanks for the info.....any idea what year quad he put it on and what HMF he went with? i have seen some on ebay at great prices that came with the main....That is why i really started this thread so i knew what to look for if i went the ebay route. Usually my honda dealer will match any price i bring him and fast turaround on ordering...usually alot faster than ebay shippers.

that is a great deal. esp. the free upgrade for color. that pipe is $200 for dealer cost. so that is one heck of deal.

go to www.jetsrus.com and read the faq on jets and jetting...because some of the jet kits out there are not worth the pain(dynojet and their rebadges)

Whats so bad about the Dynojet kits? I got one for my 05 and have had no problems with it. Came with an adjustable needle and reccomended jet chart. I jetted to their specs and it runs great.

yea I agree 9 seems a little high but I would say more than 1 or 2.... you can definitely feel a difference over a stock pipe.
