How do you guys remove the old gasket material. I know a razor blade but man its not working very well!! I think the gasket has been on the motor since 1986

razor blade, paint scrapper works but dont dig or hit the material because it will actually take chunks off. I sprayed my gasket with PB plaster (penetrating liquid for breaking bolts free and its a degreaser) let that soak in and more peeled off at once with the razor blade. Metal gaskets are th eway to go if you can get them they dont stick where you have to scrape them

I use a flat blade wood chissel to get the big chunks off. It doesn't seem to want to dig as much as a razor blade does.

Then I use, beleive it or not, a mini-plane like you'd use on a model airplane to get the small stuff off. The razor blade is nearly horizontal so it doesn't gouge the aluminum. Just cleans off the paper gasket material. It has a nice compartment to catch the material too, so there's less cleanup as well. ;)

Scotch Brite wheel on a die grinder does a great job too....

Buffer pad on end of a die grinder. Doesn't get any more simple.

You can use a wire wheel in a die grinder but you have to be careful and use low speed and little pressure. You can also get liquid gasket remover in an aerosol can.

just stay away from brillo pads. go to sears and buy a gasket scraper or use a wire wheel at a low speed.
