Ok well I have a honda 400ex 2002. Now I have always been runing synthetic oil. And now I just heard from my friend saying that I should not use synthetic. Since it will eat up my clutch or somthing.. But from what I hear you should not use synthetic on automatics.. Since it will caus slipping and mess up the timing or somthing.. Any who what should I use?

synthetic is fine as long as you dont use it when breaking in an engine. It should say too on the bottle that it can be used for wet or integrated clutches. I run KLOTZ MX4 full synthetic in mine and I love it.

synthetic is just going to make your quad run longer than his and have more power. as long as it doesnt say energy conserving or having molydeblum(spelling) your good.

I just switched to Royal Purple. I havent had any problems yet! One thing i did notice is that it revs quicker than with standard oil...

I like mobil 1, if its good enough for race cars its excellent for a quad.

15w-50 is hard to find tho..

Amsoil motorcycle 20w50 is the best, royal purple actually did not perform as well as i thought it would. There is a huge test right up about all the sythetics somewhere on this forum, i think it originated from amsoil website...not sure though. The tested them in many different ways. Amsoil is the best, but like $10 a quart.

I'm pretty sure every WalMart supercenter sells a 5 quart thing for like $21. You can get teh FRAM oil filters there too about 5 cents cheaper than advance auto

Just like Honda states in the operators manual never use oil that has the energy conserving logo on the bottle. This is what causes clutch slippage and chatter. Synthetic is great for everything except break in.

Define break in period? How many hours on the bike before I can flip over to synthetic?

Thanks

Running it during break in is fine I have done it no problem it is just myth that you shouldn't

Simple... just run the dino to the first oil/filter change.

Do heat cycle break-in... then DON'T baby it around.
Seat those rings!

After that, drain and run synthetics if you want.

I've done all that.....trust me I don't baby this bad boy. But at the same time, I've been changing the oil like crazy. I've had a couple of my buddies who race tell me to change the oil every couple of hours on a brand new bike, that way if there are any metal shavings, dirt, debris, etc from the build you get it out of the bike ASAP.

So my quad has about 15 hours on it and has had 3 oil/filter changes. I was gonna flip to synthetic at 20 hours when I do the valve adjust. Sound reasonable?
