I picked up a '86 250r, probably overpaid for it at $1300, but oh well. The frame is a little rusty and bent in spots and the swingarm has been welded. I was thinking of stripping it down and getting it straightened and some frame supports added. Then having it powdercoated. But first I want to see if the motor runs (has 0 hours on rebuild).

Its got this:

vforce reeds
38mm keihin pk carb
overbored .030
ported
maybe decked?
fmf durablue swingarm (welded)
fmf fatty pipe

It had no ignition when I bought it, so I got an ignition off ebay (you might have read the other thread where i was looking for a cheap cr250). So I bought this 89, or so it said, harness off ebay. For the most part the wiring matches up with the service manual I have (its a big pdf file someone sent me off ebay).

But there's a few spots the wiring doesn't match up. Here's some pictures of the R and the wiring highlighted. Excuse the poor picture quality, the camera isn't the greatest.

First one is the handlebar killswitch connectors, the three with the odd connectors I assume must be either for the ignition switch or the headlights...?

Then there's tan and white wires. Do these go to the ignition switch (I don't have). Can I just plug them into each other to get it to run temporariliy?

handlebar killswitch

main connector area. Coil is new. I assume the green wires are both supposed to be grounds. The coil came with the green wire connected where it is currently, and a free connector that I can't figure out where it goes to. I'll get a better pic of that area, and the cut wire (which I think is black/white) which is visible near the bottom left corner.

anyone know what I need to do to get this girl going? I don't dare kick it over until I get the wiring spot on.

the blue, green and white wires look like they are for the headlight. and the brown and white go to the dimmer switch. and then the other pick i cant really tell but there are a couple extra connectors that are not used but no black/white shouldnt be used.

thanks for the info, that makes sense as the connectors are different.

There's a black wire that's cut that seems to need to do something.

The colors don't match up from my service manual, but should those two open connectors go to the pulse generator?

Then the coil. I assume the green should be grounded. Would the other open terminal go to the black wire in the other pic?

I can take another picture or two if something's not clear.

yep, green (ground) white, blue are the lights, on mine I dont utilize the other 2 ( tan or white/yellow)

on the lower, (on mine anyway) its got the 3wire plug and the singled out Black plugged together

the reason I cant give exact is 1..its been awhile

2. I swiped the switch assembally from my 86 200x b/c the stocker was cracked up)(same, just a couple diffrent color wires...still serve the same function)

so...ignore the tan and other, be sure to plug in the black single to the black/white (unless yours has the blk/wht...then they go together

hopefully we're on the same page here w/ other than stock wire codes:D hope this helps

Do you know if the black wire goes into the coil? If it doesn't, what wire does go into the coil?

thanks so much!!

Got it running. Haven't driven it yet because its still being broken in, sounds good so far though.

those kickstart levers hurt when they whack the shin! Time to put some grip tape on it

that kickback on the kicker will bite ya sometimes haha, its your inisiation from it to you:D

so I take it you got the kill switch figured out too

I put a leather glove over the kickstart to add grip, which it did, but what's making it snapback is the backfire. happened again last night, ouch!! going to walmart tonight for some shin guards...

never did figure out the kill switch. I have a wire that supposedly goes to it, I just have dangling. Runs without doing anything to it.

For the break-in, I did the 3 warmup/cooldowns at idle and I have one 1/4 throttle putt-around under my belt then the kickstart got me again so I quit for the evening. The first two idleups I didn't have oil in the gearbox!!! :-( what a dummy I am.

First 250r I've ridden and I can tell these things have power. My blaster and z400, you have to give them some gas to get it going from a stop, this thing seems to almost jump off the line with no effort and I haven't even gone over 20% throttle!

Once I break it in and ride it around a little I think I'm going to tear it all down to the frame and get some gussets added and powdercoated. Now I just gotta do some reading up in the forums

glad ya got it going. you need to focus on learning how to kick it over to help prevent the kickback as apposed to cushioning the hurt lmao

it's kinda like starting an ole harley. ya gotta roll it over to find that sweet spot. ;)

The only time I ever slip off the kickstart is when my shoes are wet.

New developments! I've put this on hold for a bit while I purchase some AR-15s and tons of .223. But now I'm back at it. My intentions are still to strip it down, gusset the frame, powdercoat anything I can, and repair anything in the process.

The quad seemed to run good once I got it going. But starting it seems to be another thing. Its high compression and me being a sally ;) seems to flood it all the time. So I did it....

I won this cr250 stator and CDI box (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380080491802&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&viewitem=) recently. So did I get ripped off or is it a good deal? I assume all I need now is a flywheel ($30 off ebay I think) and an adapter plate for $70.

Are my only options the cr250 flywheel? Or can I select one that fits my application?

thanks in advance,
Derek
