Stator problems?

I have an older LT80. Went to start it yesterday and it started then died after about 30 seconds. started it back up and it died again about 20 seconds later. repeated this couple times til it no longer would start. pulled plug and was not getting any spark. Checked and wasn't getting any power from stator.
Do stators go out like that? Just stop all of a sudden? And is there a trick to getting that flywheel off? I took off the nut but it won't slide off, not budge. So i must be missing something. Any help or other ideas of what might be wrong would be appreciated. Thanks

You need a puller to get the flywheel off. be carefull to pull perfectly straight.
Once in, you can try sanding the flywheel and stator. See if that fixxes it.
