I just got a 2001 400ex. Its the second one I've had. The first time I took it out I was having problems climbing hills. It seems like 1st gear is way to low and 2nd gear keeps bogging down on me. The guy that had it before me went down to a 14 tooth in the front and up to a 39 tooth in the back. My question is should I go back to factory size on both the front and back or just change one of them? If only one which one?

Id leave the front at 14, and go back to a 38 in the back. That will give you more bottom end and torque to keep the rpms up while climbing hills, IMO.

Depending on how far you want to go down I have a 13/36 gearing. I don't run much top end so I'm not sure how much I lost there. I have 18" tires so I'm sure I've lost quite a bit. Like the other guy said 14/38 works good too.

I went with 13/36 i ride trails that are not very top end friendly so this should be perfect. I have not tried it yet but im sure it will be good. Coming from 15/33 gearing i should be able to tell a slight difference lol.

Yeah I'd say. With that gearing you'd do like 80mph. lol

yea i know and who wants to go 80mph through trails.... not me, i just want to be able to rip the front end up whenever i want.
