I was just talking about this at school with some people, and everyone seems to have different opinions about this. what do you guys think?

if it's barred, yeah you have to round up. but, if it's just 0.999...etc, then no it's not one because it doesn't say one is says 0.999...that's what i think about it anyway.

2003trx, the bar above it does not really mean round up. it means it is repeating but usually in math you round up so it would still be the same as .9999.....ect

Does 1.5 = 2? No.

But .9999999999 is so close to equaling 1 that for most mathmatical equations using 1 would be fine. Its only worth you while to use .99999999 if you have to be extremly accurate.

i know the equation that proves that .999999999999999 equals 1 but i am to lazy to post it, but yes it is true. Just think of it, if the .999 goes on FOREVER, it has to be equal to 1, common sense. bah:mad:

Two different numbers never equal each other. That is why you count from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and not 1, 1, 4, 5, 184, 6, 8, 3, 10.

alright, then think of it this way...

If the two numbers are not equal, then
you know you can find a number between
the two of them. But what number could
go between:

0.9999999999999999999999...

...and:

1.0000000000000000000000...

There are other ways of looking at this,
too. Try following this pattern:

1/9 = 0.1111111...
2/9 = 0.2222222...
3/9 = 0.3333333...
4/9 = 0.4444444...
5/9 = 0.5555555...
6/9 = 0.6666666...
7/9 = 0.7777777...
8/9 = 0.8888888...

Then 9/9 = 0.9999999..., but 9/9 = 1
(anything divided by itself equals 1).

And there actually is a formula, they teach it at the University of Washington...

And there is a big difference between 100-500, there is numbers betwen it, where there is none .99.....- 1

First thing, you didnt type .999 repeating, And there isnt really away for you to get 99.999 repeating on a test, if you did, you got 100 percent...

The answer depends if you are rounding 0.9999999999.... to a whole number.

Confusion would come from 0.9999999999.... being equal to 1 if you're rounding to a whole number, which I believe you are because you stated "= 1". You did not state "= 1.0000000000...". If you did, then I would definately said "no", they are not equal. Close yes; equal no.

Put another way, if the cost of something is $1.499 like a gallon of gasoline, people will (incorrectly) say that a gallon of gas costs $1.49. They should say it costs $1.50/gallon (marketing ploy developed years ago) because 1.499 is closer to 1.50 than 1.49. But to say $1.499/gallon is equal to $1.500 is absolutely INCORRECT (note that I have carried 1.500 to THREE decimal places, not two). $1.499/gallon is equal to $1.50 as I have brought it to only two decimal places, or accurate to the hundreths place.

Yet another example are money exchangers who commonly refer to the units of money they're changing to many decimal places. Being close here will certainly not cut it.

I have never seen a gas station that doesn't sell gasoline this way (by carrying the cents to the thousanths place).

You question/answer had nothing to do about being close, but everything to do with being EQUAL, which is an absolute - it either is or is not.

masta, if numbers went on forever then .9999 would not equal 1 becuase it would just keep going. the only possible way to get one is if you stopped .99999... and started going up. get it?

well if .99 repeating is equal to one then why are we not satisfied with carrying pie out only 2 places i mean i heard on the news in japan they made a machine to bring it out thousands more digits just to get it more acurate. Its not equal to 3.14 so we rounded with is completly diferent from equalling 3.14 and its the same place with .99 repeating. Also your 9/9 thing is with fractions we are talking about decimals we are talking 9/10 not 9/9 i mean correct me if im worng but ill ask my math teacher tom and im shure he will agree with me and he gets intreged with these kind of problems and will find the answer so im still with no and i will come on tom as soon as I get an answer but im sure it will be no it doesnt equal. .999999999 repeating will never NEVER equal 1 unless you round up it is extremely close but never equal

go into a aut cad program and type in 1 then go back and snap the start point type in .9999999... snap a line up at 90degrees and zoom in... u will see that the lines are not the same;)

Is simple. Just add another decimal place and put in anything but a 0.

wait I tryed thinking this out but my brain was making me mad so i stabbed it with a q-tip...

Lol really though, I think there is a differance because really when you have .99999 and a 1 there is still that .00001 differance and so there is pry gonna be instances where you might use numbers like that when predicting astroid trajectories for example. So my answer .99999999999!

If you have 2/9 and 3/9-Basiclly what you are saying is that there is nothign bewteen them.

Well you are wrong. 5/18 is between them and so is 7/24.


I could go on forever. But those just came off the top of my head. And I had a calculater in front of me.


2/9=.222222222
3/9=.999999999

It all depends on what type of operation or problem that you are working. If you are doing probilaty there is a difference between 1 and 0.999999... When it is 1 that means that it will happen all of the time, such as tossing a coin it will come up heads every time that you flip the coin. If it is 0.9999999..., there is that one time that it will come up heads.
And for those of you doing the dividing of fractions, you forgot that the top number has to be less than the bottom number. N<D
Also, when finding a number between, you add the 2 numbers and divide by 2. And if I remember correctly their is a rule saying that between every 2 numbers there is another number.
It all depends on what you are rying to find and how accurate that you want your anwer to be.
I might not be a good speller, but I know a few things about math.
Lets go to something else that has more meaning, this is all that I hear about at work(school) every day. This is just about as dumb as what color should my numbers be on the plastic.

The first one has nothing in from of the deciamal the second one does. The first one is made of all 9's the second one is made up of one (1) and some 0's. Theya re not teh same/equal.

The number system is infinite. You can carry a decimal forever. .999999999 can go forever by just adding a more digits and you'll never reach 1.

Being an engineering student and all, I'm gonna have to voice my opinion on this one... :)

0.9999999...repeating does not equal 1 if you are not rounding; this is like traveling from one place to another ever so slowly but never reaching your destination. You can get closer and closer to one when the resolution of your 0.999999... number increases, but technically, you'll never get there. This goes along the lines of what I was thinking of a while back. If I was to draw a line from point A to point B on my paper and was able to move my pencil slow enough (and I mean pretty damn slow!), it is possible that I'd never get to point B!! Kinda freaky isn't it? This concept is like when a curve approaches an asymptote but can never cross it. Ok, that's enough, I sound like a f**king dork now. :D

So, 0.99999...repeating does not equal 1, but 0.99999...rounded to a whole number equals 1.

Do you guys remember the crazy theory I posted a few months back about being trapped in a spherical ball, mirrored on the inside, with only a flashlight?? :) That's some f'ed up thinking...Man, I need to get back to studying for finals!! One day of tests and I'm free for 32 days! WooHoo!!

I can almost promise you that no one above 4th grade level, and also people not trying to be cooler than someone will say 0.99999 does not equal 1. It will if you round any decimal, but untill you either stop getting exactly acurate, or start throwing in some strange theroy that is not true, it will not ever be the same.

We are talking about math, 100% logical math, dont do some weird mind things that strange people sit in rooms and try and find loop holes in definitions of math problems... weird people.. they would do better to just learn old english and make a peom.

I like my sample. When you buy gas it is always 1.19and 9/10ths or $1.199. Well, you never get a tenth of a cent back right? NO! because they round up to the nearest cent. So at the gas station yes, .99999 equals 1.

Well Ladies,

As much as this is going to pain most of you, MastaOfDisasta is absolutely correct in his assertion that 0.9999.... (known as a convergent series) = 1. I know it can be hard to get your mind around but from a mathematical standpoint it is correct. Where I think most of you are getting lost on this principle is that you are trying to put a stopping point on carrying out the 9's. When you guys say that .999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 - (or however many 9's you could possibly ever type out) does not equal 1, you are correct. However we are talking about an INFINITE number of 9's. That is a number that you could never write out or plug into your CAD program. It is a unique and frankly theoretical concept that can not be easily represented in a way that makes it easy to comprehend.

As Masta said, assuming that the 9's go on forever, what number could possibly be between 0.9999.... and 1? Since there is no such number the two values have to equal on another.

Here is a simple formula that gives another example of this:

3*(1/3) = 1
1/3 = .33333..., therefore
3*(.33333...) = 1
However, 3 * .33333... = .99999...
Therefore, .99999... must be equal to 1

Well, I believe dhines has the most intelligent opinion on this subject so far. If you express .9(bar) as a convergent series and take the limit as it goes to infinity you will see that it does equal 1. As for the other "proofs" that some of you tried to post
1/9 = .1(bar)
2/9 = .2(bar)
...
9/9 = .9(bar) = 1

That is just a stupid incorrect proof. You must express this as a series and take the limit to make a correct proof.

OK here's my view on this.

In theory, since 0.9999999..(infinite) isn't a real number it does equal to 1 but it doesn't at the same time, depends on how you look at it. :huh :confused:

.999 is still.999... Not 1.0 If you were machining a breaing surface and needed 1.0 and tried to stick a brg in it , it wouldnt work... But if you used a big press or hammer i'm sure you could get that little extra scraped out of it to make it 1.0 to fit your brg....

But if you were to heat the surface of the part = to .999 it would expand to 1.0... :D
