I'd like some opinions and some experiences for head and base gaskets on my 416 project. What gaskets are you guys running and are they for the EX motor or the XR motor? I'd like to use the standard Honda gaskets because of availabilty. But I'd like some opinions.

Thank's for the reply. What piston are you using?

I have the Cometic gaskets on it and have had no problems what so ever. They have been on almost a year. I am not sure but it seems as though the 10.8:1 JE piston is actually running a little higher compression. If I run anything less than 100 octane, it tends to ping a bit. I have been running straight 110 ocrtane, and she seems to love it. Can ride her hard all day and she does not get too hot and there is no pinging!

I have an ims 440 with com gaskets with a je 10.8 piston. It measuered out to 10.2, with the base 10.6 without ....

so I run no base just rtv ... works fine no leaks ....

I would guess a 416 with com gaskets is like 10.1 or 10 ....

Shaneb,
When you put your cylinder on, how did you go about sealing around the top end oil passage (from case to cylinder)? Aren't you afraid that some of the RTV made it's way into the passage, and might eventually travel to and block one of the camshaft oiling holes if it were to come loose? I'm not trying to flame, I'm just wondering if there's a trick people are using to keep the oil passage free of RTV when they torque down the cylinder. I would think it would be impossible to keep the sqeeze-out from making it's way into the passage. I'm sure everyone can attest to how critical top end oiling is on this engine!

the trick is to use a very thin film of rtv don't glob it on. Both surfaces are machined so it takes very very little to seal ....
