I just put an XR400 cam in my 400ex and I love the gains it gives but I HATE the noise it makes! It taps so loud it is very irritating, I honestly don't know if I can put up with it. I knew hotcams made noise, but is it normal for this cam to be this noisy? Is the XR400 this noisy? Is there any way to quiet it down?
Also, I thought I read that the valve clearances with this cam are the same as stock, .004 for intake, .005 for exhaust, can anyone confirm this?

Is it a stock XR400 cam? Been wanting to do this for a while, but don't know if the gains are worth my time.

Yup, stock XR400 cam. I got it off ebay for $27 shipped and it looked almost new. I am very impressed with the results. Just what I wanted, a little more low and midrange oomph, and throttle response is definately crisper. Definately the best bang for the buck yet. I noticed it the most the first time I went to pull up the front end, it came up just as easy, but it held it up MUCH easier than before. So I would say go find yourself an XR400 cam and throw it in, that is IF you can stand the "TICKTICKTICKTICKTICK" that almost turns to a whine at high rpms.

Double check the valve lash to make sure you didn't set the valves on the decompression stroke.

I have an XR cam in my 416 and it sound terrible. The constant ticking is annoying, but I have been running that setup for over 5 years now and still not had a single issue. Seen a few others running the XR cam all ticked, some louder than others but still very noticeable.

as said, check your lash, even if you adjusted them when you put the cam in (as you should have). i did a top end build this summer with a hotcam and adjusted the valves. checked them a few rides after and one was a little loose already.

here's a how-to:

How to adjust your valves (http://www.atvriders.com/articles/valveadjustment400ex.html)

I did reset the valve lash after I put the cam in. I left all the plastics off so I could get to the valve covers easily then rode it naked for about a 1/2 hour and checked them, they were still on. I will check them again since its seen quite a few hours since then. But it is just as noisy as the first time I fired it up. It looks like I'm just gonna have to live with it.
