View Full Version : Having trouble with 400ex engine!

Well the guy I sold my old 2000 400ex to decided he wanted more power so he brought it back for some work.. I put in a 406cc 11:1 Wiseco piston, stage 2 Hotcam, and a full xr400 gasket set. And before I put it together I went through the intake and exhaust ports with the dremel and some sandpaper to take out the casting marks and smooth it up, also ground down the welds inside the header.

I got it all back together fine, set the valves and started it up.. It ticks really loudly and doesn't sound good, but runs perfectly fine and starts up fine! I took the valve cover back off and checked everything out, but couldn't find the problem.. Now I don't know what to do.

Please help! It's a loud, consistent tick in the upper part of the engine.

That's what I thought at first, but I have already pulled out that little tube with the spring behind it.. Could it still be that?

hot cams are almost always a little noisey. try a diferent engine oil that worked for me i now use amsoil 20w50

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the hotcams, they are definitely louder then stock... I checked mine a bunch of times worried about the noise, but never found anything...

Hopefully that's all it is.

I dont have one yet but I have heard many many posts about ppl saying after they installed a cam that there engine made more noise and was worried about doing something wrong usually there response is the cams seem to always make the engine louder.

Yeah I think it might just be the cam.. I didn't really notice it when I put the hotcam in my 450 because that engine is super loud anyway, and you could barely hear the 400 run before.
