how can i tell

i just bought a 400ex and was told its a 440. how can i tell. plus the e series pipe on it needs to be repacked real bad could that cause it to bogg in higher revs. other than that it runs great

The only thing I know to do is just open it up and see. As far as the bog, packing wont cause that, but improper jetting will.
