Hello, I spend most of my time in the 400EX forum but I stumbled across a 1986 LT250R today for dirt cheap. It does not run and has a cracked swingarm and sthe plastic is pretty beat up. The guys has all of the parts to put the motor back together minus a few nuts and bolts. He want 450 bucks for the quad, is it worth it? I have been looking for a project quad for a few months now and this sounds pretty good to me. The thing is I dont know much about the the LT250R. I know the 2-stroke motor inside and out so that is not a problem. Is the quad worth the money? I was thinking of offering him 300 and going from there. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks
Jeremy

I would offer him 300 and go from there. If you can do all the work yourself with the exception of boring the cylinder or decking the head if needed, you will probebly be into around 1200-1500 restoring it. I know cause I'm going through it right now.

Well here is the scoop, I went and looked at the quad and it was in the shape descirbed to me so I offered the guy 300 bucks and he said the lowest he would do is 400 and I told I would do 375 or take my money and head home. He decided he would take my 375 bucks and I came home with a 86 LTR250R. It is rough shape right now but I will get her put back together and running here before to long. It is raing like cats and dogs here right now or I would lget some pics but it will have to wait till tomorrow.

congrats, you got a lot of fun on your hands. I just did some welding on my frame tonight and I'm dropping the frame off to get powder coated tomorrow.

The frame and everything else looks to be in good shape, that motor in the crate would kill me, but for 375 bucks I'd say hell yah

I have had a little time to tinker with the 250 and I must say aside from the broken swingarm it is in really good shape. I have the motor torn down to replace the crank bearings and seals right now. Hopefully the parts will come this week. I will take some pics of the swingarm which I knew was broken, just did not realize how bad. I figured I will strip it all down and rebuild it like I want it. I am gonna make sure and take plenty of pics and will keep you guys posted on the build. Off to the shop for a few pics and a little more stripping down.

I have been a little under the weather lately so I have not gotten much done. The boy and I did a little more tear down over the weekend. I tore into the motor only to find that the crankshaft threads were effed up. I am waiting on a bottom end that I bought off ebay to show up so that i can start to reassemble the motor. The boy stripped the bike down to the bare frame and then I had it sandblasted yesterday. I am not sure whether I agonna have it powder coated or sprayed with a ceramic chassis paint. It all depends on the cost, as with these projects you can spend all your money on one item and then screw yourself later on down the road. The whole crank business really pissed me off cause I had to spend extra just to get the motor up and running. Also the guy I bought this from new it was screwed and just decide not to tell me, anyways enough of my BS, here are a few more pics. Keep checking back as I am gonna post this whole build in this thread.

Looking Good! I also have recently picked up a complete 85 LT250R and am currently trying to restore it. I have currently torn it down to its frame and about to sand blast it and powdercoat it, after that I wanted to tear into the motor but not sure how I sould set it up(bore, pistons, heads and carb) to get max power/torque and still have a reliable quad at a reasonable price, this is my first quadracer so I will use any help you can give me. Thanks

mpucillo79, this is my first 2-stroke quad build so I am probably not the guy you want to go to. Although I have built my fair share of 2-stroke jetski engine in the past. anyways there is a good website called quadracerhq.com that has a ton of info on the quadracer. BEWARE though, it is a tough site, the guys dont like the same question asked twice so make sure you use the search function. The guy that runs the site "DR.Q" has a ton of knowledge but can seem a bit grumpy at times so take it with a grain of salt. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them or get you the answer. I will continue to post pics of my build as parts are starting to show up. There hasnt been much going on thats why there arent any new pics but the frame hopefully will be powder coated here before to long.
