i have a 2007 400ex. it was hard to start when i got it. i put a full system exhaust and air filter on it. it will not start with out choking it now regardless of the temp. i put a bigger main and no pilot. it will start every time, but it is hard to start and takes forever to warm up. do i need a bigger pilot or what?

No pilot? Do you mean you didnt change the pilot or you took it out?

Put a 42 pilot in and maybe a 152 main jet. Also, make sure your valves are still in spec.

i meant i didn't change the pilot. will it start good all year round with a 42?

Yup, put a 42 pilot in that bad boy, cures cold starting blues. Remember to check your valve clearances as well, really easy to do. ;) Also, tell us what size main you have in it.

i have a 172. that is what was recommended from phil's cycle, the place i bought it. the power is great, noticable gains everywhere. i noticed you lived in oklahoma. where you at?

I live in Bartlesville

172 sounds a little rich to me. 160 at the most for your mods and elevation and definitely put a 42 pilot in.

also, when i start it it blows smoke out of the exhaust and the air filter sounds like it pops or maybe sucks in a bunch of air or maybe even needs more air i can't tell. it only does only happens when the four wheeler in cold. i have to give it full throttle when i start it.. maybe that's the smoke. this didn't happen until i put the exhaust & filter on. the smoke coming from the exhaust it black.

sounds like you're way too rich.

too rich on the main and too lean on the pilot?
